Korean media report: Meta partnered with LG to launch a new Quest Pro in 2025 to compete with Apple's Vision Pro; Meta also plans a sub-$200 headset in 2024

Context & Ripple Effects

The report places Meta on a two-tier hardware path: a lower-cost headset alongside a premium device aimed at Apple. That follows earlier signs that the company’s high-end line could carry a four-figure price tag in the earlier Quest Pro pricing report.

Subsequent coverage shows how fluid that premium roadmap remained: Meta introduced the $500 Quest 3 while later reporting said it was pursuing a cheaper Quest and AR glasses. A later reported cancellation of a premium mixed-reality project underscores that a reported Quest Pro plan was not necessarily a committed product launch.

First-order effects

  • If accurate, the LG partnership would add a named hardware collaborator to Meta’s reported premium-headset effort, with Vision Pro as the stated competitive benchmark.
  • The reported sub-$200 model would extend Meta’s Quest lineup downward in price, while the new Quest Pro would preserve a separate high-end track.

Second-order effects

  • Apple would face competition framed around two distinct buyer segments: a lower-cost entry point and a premium mixed-reality alternative, rather than a single flagship comparison.
  • A partner-led premium device could make component sourcing, industrial design, and manufacturing execution more central differentiators for Meta’s headset strategy.

Third-order effects

  • The pattern points toward mixed-reality vendors segmenting portfolios by price and capability, using lower-cost devices to build an installed base while reserving premium hardware for advanced experiences.
  • Whether that structure endures depends on premium devices finding a sustainable role; the later reported cancellation of Meta’s La Jolla headset suggests high-end roadmaps can be revised when the economics or product fit change.

The trend: Mixed-reality competition is shifting toward multi-tier product portfolios, pairing mass-market headset pricing with selective premium bets against Apple.

Yeah I see what you're getting at.  It'll have to be substantially better than the Quest 2 also with 20 million of them floating about.  Guess we'll have to wait and see.  My opinion is I'm not sure a $200 VR device is needed in the market at this time but what do I know 😅 Curiou…

Thinking of what could be sacrificed to get to the $200 price point for Quest 3 Lite.  Fresnel lenses perhaps?  Goddamn, tho, on that price point.
  • @noise.in.vacuum Tarun on threads
That's a fair assessment.  I feel that they would want to keep as much content compatible as possible between Quest 3 and Quest 3 lite.  So I don't think we'll see XR2 Gen 1.  I'm not sure where else they can cut significant cost apart from processor and displays. …

My bet; 1) MR: On par with Quest 3, maybe no depth sensor and AI takes care of depth calculations using CV 2) Controllers: no controllers in package, optional $60 purchase.  3) Processor: XR2 Gen2 4) Displays: Fresnel lenses like Quest 2 No Controllers and fresnel lenses will lik…

@Techmeme people will bemoan that these cheaper headsets are essentially subsidized by the data Meta collects, but everyone loves the world of cheap televisions that are cheap for the same exact reason.

Interesting claims in this report: - Meta Quest Pro 2 will be released in 2025 for ~2000 USD and will be called Meta Quest 4 Pro. It will be built in cooperation with LG. - A 2024 Quest (Ventura/Quest 3 Lite?) will be <200 USD. https://m.mk.co.kr/...

@afoxdesign There's been a lot of speculation. The leading theory is that it might end up being a “pure VR” device to replace Quest 2 in the line-up, likely with the new chip. Patents aren't products, but I'm still gunning on it looking similar to this. [image]

@AUT0M4T1C_JACK ... An ex-employee from Meta mentioned that it will include controllers. I personally doubt that the input method will rely solely on hand tracking. Meta's best option to ensure this headset's success is to enable users to access a wide range of games from their l…

I hear a lot of comments from *industry sources* that companies like Meta and Samsung are pushing for Qualcomm's Orion chip (M2 competitor) to mature to the point it can be used in a VR HMD It's gonna be close though. That project keeps getting delayed due to different problems
