That's a bummer.  Looks like I am in the market for another domain seller.  Squarespace hasn't been the best steward of domain purchasing.

Of the large tech cos, Google is the worst managed by a long shot. No coherent strategy, no consistent product delivery. Just a bunch of siloed bureaucrats in short-lived competition for the next promotion, wasting away the profits from the ads business. https://twitter.com/...

at this point i dont understand, why would you build anything that relies on a google service that isnt search or gmail to continue existing lol such a weird precedent to set as a company https://twitter.com/...

AWS pioneered ephemeral cloud services with Lambda, a serverless compute platform that goes away when you don't need it. GCP takes this a step further by making the service offering itself ephemeral, whether you need it or not. It's the New Way To Cloud™. https://twitter.com/... …

it's cool that google+ lasted just enough to make the pseudonym system at youtube a byzantine labyrinth of nonsense that discord could only dream of and now g domains lasted enough to make https://website.zip/ a valid tld. megamind-ass move https://twitter.com/...

I used to think it was just a fun joke that Google shutting stuff down caused people to rely on them less. But mother fucker. Literally just started using Google Domains. “The service exited beta in 2022.” https://twitter.com/...

Also: as a Google Domains customer, why am hearing about this news from Squarespace's press release? Google (my provider, and where I'm a customer) has not told me this is happening. I assume same with the other 10M impacted domains' owners.

Wow: Google IS killing Google Domains; selling it to Squarespace. This is 10 million domains sold. Millions of customers like me learn again (and again!) that you cannot trust Google to keep their own products alive. Show me another vendor that throws away customers like this... …

Extremely disappointed by Google Domains sell-off. Great, no-frills product with top notch security thanks to Google accounts. I have no desire to be a Squarespace customer. Time for @cloudflare to increase TLD coverage /cc @eastdakota https://www.bloomberg.com/...

Squarespace CEO Anthony Casalena noted the company is a registrar with millions of domains under management. Under its own creds, has about 850k .com domains as of 3 months ago according to ICANN reports.

like Google's spectrum bidding, their domains play was largely a misdirect. Google had commoditized domain names that there is no real point to managing them. https://www.prnewswire.com/...

I'm eagerly awaiting the Very Serious Takes that @GoogleCloud isn't a risky bet. If my cloud provider tells me that for the domain registration part I need to go talk to Squarespace, I'm picking a different cloud because I don't want to get fired. https://twitter.com/...

i have 0% hope that the transition will be flawless. oh dear, so many web agencies or “cousins of store owners” now have to migrate hundreds if not thousands of domains so many domains were bought years ago in advance, people may have lost access https://twitter.com/...

Wow. Insane. I wonder if Google domains offering .zip top level domains last month was a last ditch effort to salvage the business and inject it with cash flow. Best (unlikely) case scenario is squarespace shuts down .zip TLDs and refunds everyone who bought one. https://twitter.…

Incredible. Google appears to be existing the domains business. https://domains.squarespace.com/ Though I'm a happy Squarespace customer, I'm sad, as Google Domains was/is probably the company's all-time best product. Great UI, blazing fast, logically organized.

Google domains is a fantastic product, so of course Alphabet is killing it off, like they do for nearly every elegant product they own. 🤦‍♂️ So much broken user trust over the years 😞 https://twitter.com/...
