CCData: trading on Gemini dropped ~50% YoY to ~$747M in April; Kaiko says trading fell 46% in January to April from September to December, ~6x Coinbase's drop

Since going all-in on Bitcoin over a decade ago, Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss have had their share of ups and downs.

Bloomberg

Context & Ripple Effects

Gemini's volume collapse is the latest step in a funding arc: the exchange raised $400M at a $7.1B valuation in late 2021, then failed to raise again this spring, forcing the Winklevoss twins to extend a $100M personal loan to Gemini Trust. Now Kaiko's data shows its January–April trading fell roughly six times faster than the broader market's decline.

The comparison with Coinbase sharpens the picture: Coinbase's own April volume slid to $26.8B, its lowest monthly level in 16 months despite bitcoin and ether rallies — so Gemini isn't just riding the same downturn, it is losing share on top of it.

First-order effects

  • Gemini's fee revenue shrinks at the worst possible moment: the exchange is already dependent on the Winklevoss twins' $100M loan after investors declined to fund it, so the ~50% YoY drop to ~$747M deepens a self-funded cash squeeze.
  • Coinbase, itself at 16-month volume lows, at least sees its decline outpaced by Gemini's — the Kaiko 6x differential reframes Coinbase as the relative share winner in a shrinking market.

Second-order effects

  • Institutional counterparties and market makers reading Kaiko's and CCData's data have a quantified reason to route flow toward the largest venues, compounding Gemini's decline as liquidity begets liquidity.
  • Gemini's 2021 $7.1B mark becomes an anchor it cannot defend with volume down ~50% YoY, making any future raise either a steep down round or another insider loan.

Third-order effects

  • If the pattern holds, US crypto trading consolidates structurally around the largest exchange, with mid-tier venues shrinking faster than the market and the 2021 vintage valuations unwinding one disclosure at a time.
  • Data firms like Kaiko and CCData become the de facto arbiters of exchange health — their volume differentials now drive where counterparties and capital move.

The trend: Post-2021 crypto trading is consolidating toward the largest exchanges, with mid-tier venues like Gemini bleeding volume several times faster than the market and insider loans substituting for outside capital.

all eyes on Gemini: mounting market, legal and regulatory challenges are clouding the crypto exchange's future, as its space-loving founders seek an overseas reset. a deep dive from @olgakharif and me for this week's @business Big Take 📖https://www.bloomberg.com/ ...

Fascinating. Every single crypto currency exchange loses money hand over fist. https://twitter.com/...

These should be very profitable businesses and could be again, but when your cost structure assumes the market is going to grow like the Internet and instead it grows like the disco market in the 80s you will run into trouble. https://twitter.com/...
