Instagram adds support for GIFs in comments on posts and Reels, plans to launch a lyrics feature for Reels, and will roll out Instagram Gifts in India

On Tuesday, Mark Zuckerberg held a chat with Instagram head Adam Mosseri as part of the company launching collaboration feature on broadcast channels.

Context & Ripple Effects

This follows Instagram’s recent Reels update that added trending audio and hashtag discovery while expanding Gifts and creator tools. The new changes extend that same Reels-focused product cadence into commenting, music expression, and a new country rollout.

GIF support also builds on Instagram’s earlier GIPHY-powered GIFs in Stories, moving the format from creation and sharing into public conversation around posts and Reels.

First-order effects

  • People commenting on posts and Reels gain GIF replies, adding a richer response format directly to Instagram’s discussion layer.
  • Reels creators are set to receive a lyrics feature, while Instagram Gifts will become available in India, expanding the feature’s geographic reach.

Second-order effects

  • More expressive comments can give creators and publishers another way to prompt visible audience interaction around Reels, alongside the platform’s recent discovery and editing additions.
  • The India rollout makes Gifts a more important part of Instagram’s creator-feature package there; creators and audiences will need to decide whether the feature adds enough value to adopt.

Third-order effects

  • If Instagram continues to bundle discovery, creative tools, collaboration, and Gifts into Reels, short-form video becomes a broader engagement and creator-support surface rather than a standalone format.
  • The pattern points to social platforms competing through tightly integrated participation tools—how people react, create, and support creators—not only through feed distribution.

The trend: Instagram is steadily turning Reels into a fuller creator ecosystem by layering conversation, music-led creation, discovery, collaboration, and Gifts around short-form video.
