EFF's free HTTPS tool 'Let's Encrypt' enters public beta

Really, there's no good reason for devs to not adopt HTTPS certification.  The added protection makes you and your users safer, and ensures that you can guarantee that your website doesn't inject malicious malware, tracking or unwanted ads onto your user experience.

The public beta caps a fast year for Let's Encrypt: the EFF-Mozilla-Cisco project announced its launch schedule in June (general availability set for mid-September), issued its first free certificate in September, and by October had its certificates trusted by all major browsers — the trust hurdle that previously made free CAs unviable.

That browser-trust milestone is the real unlock here. With issuance automated and validation no longer a bottleneck, the beta turns what was a pilot into infrastructure any developer can adopt at zero cost.

  • Developers and site operators can now get trusted HTTPS certificates free and without manual vetting, removing the price-and-paperwork barrier that kept small sites on HTTP.
