EFF's free HTTPS tool 'Let's Encrypt' enters public beta

Really, there's no good reason for devs to not adopt HTTPS certification.  The added protection makes you and your users safer, and ensures that you can guarantee that your website doesn't inject malicious malware, tracking or unwanted ads onto your user experience.

Let's Encrypt has hit every milestone on the schedule it laid out in June, when it announced a July limited launch and mid-September general availability: it issued its first free HTTPS certificate with Mozilla and Cisco in September, then cleared the real hurdle in October when all major browsers began trusting its certificates. Public beta is the step that turns a working certificate authority into one any developer can point a domain at.

That browser-trust milestone is what makes this beta matter rather than being a demo — encryption was previously gated on paying a commercial certificate authority, and the EFF-backed project removes both the cost and much of the setup friction.

First-order effects

  • Developers running their own sites can now obtain trusted TLS certificates at no cost during the open beta, directly undercutting the paid-certificate model that incumbent certificate authorities sell on.

  • Hosting providers and platform operators face pressure to bake automated Let's Encrypt issuance into their stacks, since customers will increasingly expect free HTTPS as a default feature rather than an add-on purchase.
