TikTok announces TikTok Trivia, a livestreamed trivia quiz with a $500K prize pool hosted daily between February 22 and 26, open to US users aged 18 and older

TikTok is taking a page out of HQ's playbook and launching a series of live trivia games, the company announced today.

The Verge Mia Sato

Context & Ripple Effects

TikTok had already expanded LIVE with events, co-hosts, Q&As and moderation tools as it sought to compete more directly with Instagram Live. That LIVE feature build-out created the product surface for scheduled, interactive programming rather than one-off creator broadcasts.

The quiz format has a clear precedent in HQ Trivia's twice-daily cash games, while TikTok's later live music competition shows the company continuing to test prize-led appointment viewing on LIVE.

First-order effects

  • US TikTok users aged 18 and older gain five days of scheduled live games and access to a shared $500,000 prize pool.
  • TikTok gives its LIVE product a time-bound, platform-programmed event designed to draw viewers into daily broadcast windows.

Second-order effects

  • Instagram Live faces a more explicit engagement-format challenge from TikTok: the competition shifts beyond creator tools toward programming that rewards viewers for showing up at a set time.
  • TikTok can use participation in Trivia to test whether prize-backed live events create repeat viewing behavior that its existing LIVE features alone do not.

Third-order effects

  • The progression from trivia to a later prize-based music competition points to LIVE evolving from a creator-broadcast feature into a venue for recurring, platform-owned interactive entertainment.
  • If that pattern holds, live-video competition will increasingly turn on the ability to package formats, prizes and audience participation—not only on stream quality or creator reach.

The trend: Social platforms are turning livestreaming into appointment-based interactive programming, using competitions and prizes to concentrate audience attention.

When I saw this announcement, the first thing I thought of was another trivia app that ByteDance launched in its pre-TikTok era. It was called Beat The Q, and it pretty promptly flopped. Looks like the old twitter account is still live! https://twitter.com/... https://twitter.com…

TikTok has quietly launched its shop pilot in the U.S., an in-app checkout feature that brands and marketers have been waiting for as they look to capitalize on the #TikTokMadeMeBuyIt trend. Pacsun and Revolve appear to be among the pilot brands. https://adage.com/... https://twi…

TikTok esting in-app checkout https://adage.com/... there have always been a TON of problems with the UX of checkout on social platforms, one interesting part of TikTok test is that it allows multi-sku purchases. https://twitter.com/...
