Activision Blizzard plans to require employees to come to the office three days per week starting on April 10 for Activision Publishing and July 10 for Blizzard

Remote work is reportedly ending across Activision Blizzard.  According to a developer at Blizzard Entertainment

Game Developer

Context & Ripple Effects

This mandate lands at a company whose workforce has already shown it will organize against leadership decisions: staff staged a walkout in July 2021 demanding fairer treatment, then held a second walkout that November calling for CEO Bobby Kotick to step down. More recently, the company let individual studios decide its vaccine-return policy rather than impose one centrally, and converted its contingent QA staff to full-time roles.

The staggered April 10 / July 10 rollout splits the policy across Activision Publishing and Blizzard Entertainment, and it lands as other big employers tighten too — Amazon is reportedly forcing some remote corporate staff to relocate under its own three-day office mandate. Remote work is described as ending across the company.

First-order effects

  • Employees hired or relocated during the fully remote period now face a commute or relocation decision, with Activision Publishing staff hit first in April and Blizzard staff in July.
  • Leadership is testing how much goodwill its recent concessions — studio-level autonomy on return policies and full-time conversion of QA contractors — bought it, given the workforce's walkout history.

Second-order effects

  • Rival game studios that keep flexible arrangements gain a recruiting wedge for exactly the senior developers most likely to quit over a commute mandate.
  • Activision Blizzard's move reinforces Amazon-style standardization among large corporate employers, pressuring mid-size peers to pick a side on office presence rather than drift.

Third-order effects

  • If the three-day model keeps spreading from tech into games, pandemic-era fully distributed hiring becomes structurally untenable at large publishers, and office proximity re-emerges as a career constraint.
  • At companies with organized workforces like Activision Blizzard, return-to-office mandates join pay and treatment as recurring flashpoints for collective action, raising the cost of top-down workplace policy.

The trend: Large tech and gaming employers are converging on standardized three-day office mandates, unwinding the fully remote arrangements of the pandemic era one announcement at a time.

Today, Activision and Blizzard announced a return to office plan to employees. It begins April/June, depending on the studio. The company WILL see a large Reduction In Force if this occurs. In this thread, I'm going to explain why this is a terrible idea. 1/14

I honestly think & believe that stepping away from remote work is incredibly backwards. Its one of the few “good” developments coming from an incredibly difficult time. It eliminated so many barriers, from long commutes to offering opportunities to people with disabilities. https…

I don't think the future of employment in the games industry is centered around requirements for on-site work, especially as a deadly and disabling disease continues to spread widely around the world. https://twitter.com/...

This is shit but I'm sure smarter competitors all around are excited to have a lot of incredible talent up for hiring soon https://www.gamedeveloper.com/ ...

If not for the ability to work remotely I wouldn't have been able to start at Respawn when I did. Given current circumstances, if the remote policy ever ended I would almost certainly need to find another job - which I don't want to do. https://www.gamedeveloper.com/ ...

companies made record profits after the plague started while everyone has been working at home ending permanent work from home policies isnt about “collaboration” or “teamwork”. it's about control https://twitter.com/...

Work from home created the best WOW expansion since a long time! Why is capitalism that tone deaf? To the point of sabotaging their own successes? https://www.gamedeveloper.com/ ...

Activision plans to end remote work and require people to be in the office 3 days a week. This is another stealth layoff as there's really no reason to be in the office every week to code or discuss video games with coworkers versus being on Zoom. https://www.gamedeveloper.com/ .…

What is it with companies so publicly putting foot in mouth lately It's not hard to just continue to let people do their jobs in places they can afford/want to be in https://twitter.com/...

I know this is contentious for some, but I'll say this as a game developer and studio head. Creating games is a creative collaborative effort. It's very, very hard to do remotely. There's a spark that's missing when remote and it's hard to explain it. https://twitter.com/...

This proposal is being actively protested by 95% of Acti/Blizz employees. If enforced, there WILL BE a mass labor exodus in the future. Don't do this, @ATVI_AB. You can't afford it. https://www.gamedeveloper.com/ ...

WoW has launched TWO expansions since the start of the pandemic. The work is still getting done. What's the point of forcing everyone back into the office?! https://twitter.com/...

There are tons of people in the industry who would love these positions and gladly go into the office for these jobs. If people wanna work remotely, find another job. Working in person as a team will always win over remote work, you can't change my mind. https://twitter.com/...

The looming return to office date was my primary reason for leaving Riot. These studios are bleeding so much of the talent they cultivated last decade. Hope its worth it for them. So many rival and soon-to-be rival studios are benefitting from this. https://twitter.com/...

(VGC) Activision Blizzard employees in the US are being forced to return to the office soon, to the anger of some employees, it's been claimed. Working full-time from home is reportedly being abolished. It begins in April/June, depending on the studio. https://www.videogameschron…

Pandemic proved work from home works. We have still hit the same deadlines and produced the same work. I get that people like the social aspect of the office but it's not required. It should be an option https://twitter.com/...

It's going to be an interesting future for studios who do and don't offer remote, it's really going to split the talent pool in favour of remote I think, given the option I think most people would prefer to choose if they want to be in an office or not https://twitter.com/...

This feels like a underhanded way of doing layoffs without doing layoffs. The people making the decisions are either extremely incompetent and or know they will lose people because of this and save a buck doing it. To be frank its overall unhealthy and cruel in many ways. https:/…

I feel like if it was proven over lockdown that your job can be done remotely (as many office jobs were), then I think at best they should stay remote part of the week if not all of it. I think the only reason offices like those end all remote work is because management are jerks…
  • @danahern96 Dan Ahern on x
I do genuinely feel bad for people who prefer in office work; they should absolutely be given the choice That being said, mandated RTO is ridiculous, good luck retaining your talent when other companies have happily switched to full time remote https://www.gamedeveloper.com/ ...
