The Open Container Project launched a month ago as a truce between feuding rivals Docker and CoreOS, hosted by the Linux Foundation with Google, Amazon, Microsoft and VMware around the table. The rename to the Open Container Initiative plus rapid sign-ons from AT&T, Oracle and Twitter shows the truce holding — and expanding past the original vendor cast.

What changed is who is joining: AT&T, Oracle and Twitter are container users and platform operators, not container tooling vendors. Their arrival signals that enterprises want a stable, neutral image-and-runtime spec before committing production workloads, which is exactly the assurance a foundation-governed project exists to provide.
