A month of open warfare ends in a handshake. In early May, CoreOS took its rival App Container spec to an independent foundation with Google, VMware, Red Hat and Apcera backing (CoreOS spins off its App Container project) — a direct challenge to Docker's de facto control of the container format. Today that fight is folded into a single Open Container Project under the Linux Foundation, with Docker, CoreOS, Google, Amazon, Microsoft and VMware all signing the same standards effort.

The significance is governance: by moving the container format into a vendor-neutral home, the cloud's biggest platforms are agreeing not to compete on the runtime itself. The question the coverage now turns to is where the competition goes instead.

  • Docker loses sole stewardship of its own container format — the spec is now set by a body where Amazon, Microsoft and Google hold seats, capping the lock-in value of Docker's runtime dominance.
