Anthropic S-1: an $80.7B net loss on revenue of $16.3B in H1 2026, up from a $13B net loss on revenue of $1.2B in H1 2025, and a net revenue retention of 900%

Anthropic PBC filed for an IPO, moving a step closer to being the first company focused primarily on developing the most advanced artificial intelligence models to go public.

Bloomberg Bailey Lipschultz

Context & Ripple Effects

Anthropic entered the filing after reporting 2025 revenue growth to roughly $4.6 billion alongside a $42 billion net loss. The S-1 turns that growth-and-loss profile into a public-market diligence exercise rather than a private fundraising narrative.

The prospectus had already highlighted that roughly 20% of first-half revenue came from two customers; the accompanying disclosures also put nearly $9 billion of the loss into computing power and infrastructure and disclose nearly $800 billion in commitments over 10 years. That makes customer durability and contracted capacity central to how investors read the reported retention rate.

First-order effects

  • Anthropic’s filing opens its revenue concentration, 900% net revenue retention and loss composition to public-market scrutiny as it pursues a Nasdaq listing.
  • Prospective shareholders will enter a company whose Public Benefit Corporation status is set to remain in place after the IPO, making that governance structure part of the investment case.

Second-order effects

  • Anthropic’s confirmed price cuts amid low switching costs and open-weight competition put greater weight on whether its reported customer expansion can persist after lower pricing.
  • The disclosed compute and infrastructure costs, together with long-term commitments, make Anthropic’s capacity contracts a material constraint on the financing terms investors will accept.

Third-order effects

  • If Anthropic can use public equity to support its compute commitments, its listing will test whether a frontier-model company can shift large infrastructure obligations from private fundraising into public-market valuation.
  • Anthropic’s retained PBC structure will also test whether public investors accept mission-oriented governance alongside the capital demands of advanced-model development.

The trend: Frontier AI labs are moving toward public-market financing, with retention, customer concentration and compute commitments becoming inseparable parts of the valuation debate.

“As of June 30, 2026, we hadraised an aggregate of $141.1 billion of capital and had cash and cash equivalents of $112.4 billion and short- term investments of $19.3 billion” I think Anthropic might be okay for a little while tbh.

A lot of people will key in on the $80.7 billion net loss in the first half of this year A couple clarifications: > actual operating loss was $693 million > $72.4b of the $80.7b net loss was due to change in fair value of convertible notes, derivative liabilities, and SAFEs > The…

Does anyone see an actual figure for capex in the $ANT S-1? There's NO WAY it was just $482M in the first 6 months of this year. Where is it buried?
