IPO prospectus: Anthropic reports a net loss of $42B in 2025, with operating losses of $8B+; revenue grew 12x to ~$4.6B, ~25% of which came from two customers

Anthropic is making a massive bet that AI will transform the global economy more profoundly than industrialization …

Reuters Echo Wang

Context & Ripple Effects

Anthropic’s filing puts its 2025 losses and customer concentration beside an already aggressive growth narrative: investor disclosures in May forecast its first operating profit, while September reporting described annualized-revenue expectations above $100 billion. The prospectus makes clear how much execution sits between those projections and the historical cost base.

The revenue profile is also entwined with distribution and infrastructure partners: Anthropic routed 47% of 2025 sales through Amazon and Google, paying distribution fees, while separately disclosing more than $518 billion of long-term AI-infrastructure commitments.

First-order effects

  • IPO investors must assess Anthropic’s valuation against a 2025 net loss of $42 billion and operating losses above $8 billion, rather than revenue growth alone.
  • With roughly a quarter of 2025 revenue coming from two customers, renewals and spending decisions by those buyers carry outsized weight for Anthropic’s near-term revenue base.

Second-order effects

  • Amazon and Google gain bargaining leverage as distribution partners after handling 47% of Anthropic’s 2025 sales, making partner fees and route-to-market economics material to the company’s margins.
  • The combination of large losses and largely non-cancelable infrastructure obligations makes converting revenue growth into compute utilization and durable gross margin a central test of Anthropic’s IPO case.

Third-order effects

  • If comparable AI labs seek public listings, investors will increasingly evaluate them as capital-intensive infrastructure businesses, with customer concentration, cloud commitments and distribution fees alongside model revenue.
  • The disclosures strengthen the distinction between headline AI revenue growth and the financing capacity required to sustain it, shifting scrutiny toward who bears long-term compute commitments.

The trend: AI labs are entering a public-capital cycle in which fast-growing software revenue is being weighed against infrastructure-heavy balance sheets and concentrated commercial dependencies.

Whatever example AI (equity!) bulls have in their head of a firm losing money before becoming profitable (Uber, Tesla, Amazon) that gives them hope, this is...not that. The labs are losing money *way* faster and at a much greater scale than anything we've seen before.

IMO the IPO filing indicates Anthropic is at or near operating profit. $34M of expenses is one-time non-cash accounting nonsense. 2025 compute costs are 1.6x revenue. But revenue has 4x in 2026. Most of compute costs are training, which won't grow relative to inference revenue
