Cyberattacks on Sunday night targeted Danfoss-managed refrigeration systems across hundreds of French supermarkets, heating them to 50°C for roughly six hours

Hundreds of supermarkets in France were targeted by cyberattacks on Sunday night, disabling refrigeration systems and forcing stores to throw out damaged food.

Context & Ripple Effects

The incident extends a longstanding industrial-control-system risk into food retail: a 2021 Schneider Electric control-system flaw showed that vulnerabilities in building and utility controls could let attackers alter commands. The immediate consequence here is physical product loss rather than a conventional data breach.

Remote-operation dependencies have already created operational exposure elsewhere: attacks on German wind companies disrupted control of more than 2,000 turbines for a day in 2022. The supermarket attack shows the same control-plane problem reaching temperature-sensitive retail infrastructure.

First-order effects

  • Affected French supermarkets must discard damaged inventory and manage disruption to refrigerated-food sales after the systems were heated for roughly six hours.
  • Danfoss faces immediate scrutiny from supermarket customers over the security and recovery controls surrounding its managed refrigeration systems.

Second-order effects

  • Retailers using remotely managed refrigeration are likely to prioritize isolation, access control and recovery procedures for cold-production equipment, making cyber resilience an operational procurement requirement for vendors such as Danfoss.
  • The event broadens the business impact of industrial-control intrusions from downtime to spoilage, linking security failures directly to retailers' inventory and food-safety operations.

Third-order effects

  • If such attacks recur, operators of connected physical systems will have to treat cyber controls as part of safety and continuity design, rather than as a separate IT function.
  • The pattern points toward greater scrutiny of centralized remote-management layers, whose compromise can affect many sites at once.

The trend: Cyber risk is increasingly concentrating in the remote control layers that connect digital intrusions to immediate physical disruption across distributed infrastructure.

[Translated] I confirm that a cyberattack has been affecting, since last night, the cold production facilities of several stores in our network @CooperativeU .  Our teams are fully mobilized, in coordination with refrigeration specialists, to restore the situation as quickly as p…

I've earlier today made a joke about Dutch largest supermarket chain's online system being down since last night as connected to Russian datacenters, but there might be an actual Russian connection. I'm now reading that the Belgian chain Delhaize has also been affected, and the F…

For those outside France: attackers remotely forced continuous defrost cycles on supermarket fridges (setpoints up to 50 °C) across ~150+ Intermarché, U and Leclerc stores. Changes started around midnight. Staff found the damage in the morning.

Russia may have used hackers to attack hundreds of supermarkets in France, the Netherlands, and Belgium. Investigations are underway. Russia could be behind such a cyberattack, but at this stage, it would be premature to attribute the attack to Russia or Russian state actors. The…

If the Intermarché chain would like to pay me a large consultancy fee, I'd advise them don't put your fridges on the internet 😁 my fridge is immune to cyberattacks because it's 100% offline and I really don't see why a supermarket's fridges should be different 🤷‍♀️ [embedded post…
