Microsoft opens preorders for the $2,599+ Surface Laptop Ultra, shipping from October 16, with an RTX Spark and three USB-C ports; one is magnetic like MagSafe

Surface Laptop Ultra is available to order today, with shipments expected to begin on October 16.

Windows Central Zac Bowden

Context & Ripple Effects

Microsoft positioned the Surface line for business buyers with its 2025 Surface Laptop 5G launch, then raised the hardware ceiling in June with the RTX Spark-based Surface Laptop Ultra reveal and its 15-inch mini-LED display and up to 128GB of unified memory.

Preorders turn that June product announcement into a dated commercial test for a premium Windows machine. The accompanying coverage frames the system within Microsoft and Nvidia's push to put AI-oriented compute and agent software on Windows PCs.

First-order effects

  • Microsoft can begin converting interest in its highest-priced Surface Laptop into orders, while buyers have an October 16 delivery target for configurations starting at $2,599.
  • The Surface Laptop Ultra gives Microsoft a flagship shipping vehicle for the RTX Spark platform, rather than leaving that platform at the announcement stage.

Second-order effects

  • Other RTX Spark laptop makers, including Dell and Asus models highlighted in public reaction, face an immediate premium-Surface reference point on price, availability and hardware configuration.
  • The October shipment window gives Microsoft a concrete demand signal for high-memory, AI-focused Windows hardware that can inform how broadly it positions similar Surface systems.

Third-order effects

  • If premium buyers reward the RTX Spark configuration, Surface's role may shift further from a broad Windows reference design toward a showcase for Windows AI and agent capabilities.
  • A successful launch would strengthen the case for competition in Windows PCs to center on integrated AI compute, memory capacity and software agents rather than processor branding alone.

The trend: Windows PC vendors are using premium AI-oriented hardware as the launch surface for broader agent-computing strategies.

@IsForAt But honestly? The hardware was seriously compelling. I'm not one to swoon over Microsoft products, but I've also mentioned it a dozen times to folks as the shape of the future. So... watch this space?

@IsForAt I got to play with a Surface laptop at a recent Microsoft event. The hardware was impressive; I'd buy it! Unfortunately it's pretty obvious they faked the demo though, because it went 90 seconds and didn't once try to upsell me Copilot.

This is the correct take. Microsoft ought to turn some of its AI resources inward. Give us the Windows experience we've always deserved but have yet to see. Before AI, I could understand why it would take them years to clean up the interface and UX snags. Where's the excuse now?
