Meta, Walmart, Instinct, Shopify, Sierra, Stripe, and others publish the Personal Agent Protocol to standardize and secure how AI bots interact with businesses

A month after Meta's launch of Muse, the personal agent that quickly turned into a viral sensation, a group of companies …

CNBC Kate Rooney

Context & Ripple Effects

Meta first positioned Muse as a cloud-hosted personal agent, then extended it into a small-business workflow spanning third-party software and Meta ad accounts through its app-integration push.

Shopify had already outlined Shop Pay checkout for Muse, putting agent permissioning at the point of purchase. The protocol moves that progression from individual integrations toward a shared framework for business-agent interactions.

First-order effects

  • Meta, Walmart, Instinct, Shopify, Sierra, Stripe and the other publishers gain a common protocol for standardizing and securing how their businesses receive requests from personal agents.
  • Businesses building integrations for personal agents have a published baseline around which to design consent and trust flows, rather than relying solely on one-off partner arrangements.

Second-order effects

  • Shopify’s proposed Shop Pay flow becomes an early test of whether shared agent rules can support agent-initiated purchases at Shopify-powered stores.
  • Other agent vendors and merchants face a compatibility decision: join the protocol’s working group or maintain separate interaction and permission models as the founders promote a common standard.

Third-order effects

  • If adoption extends beyond the founding group, protocol governance and agent identity design could become competitive control points in agentic commerce; public reactions already flag both identity gaps and concern over independent stewardship.
  • A shared trust layer would shift competition from merely connecting agents to apps toward controlling distribution, consent, and transaction access across business networks.

The trend: Personal AI agents are moving from proprietary app integrations toward shared permission and trust layers for conducting business interactions.

Instinct in group chats...Making plans with friends usually turns into a frustrating back-and-forth over times and places.  With Instinct in the group, you can explore options together, agree on a plan and get it done, all in one thread.  Your friends don't even need Instinct to …

If Meta/Sierra's protocol gets adoption, I wouldn't be surprised if people immediately start trying to generalize it to coding agents.  But it's missing some key pieces around agent identity.  Others are further ahead on giving the agent its own identity and authority, while stil…

Bummer to not see Amazon on here. When you have the biggest castle, it's hard not to obsess over your moat. But that's a huge mistake in an era when bridges are getting 10x easier to build every year.

Interesting to see Walmart, Stripe, Shopify in here and Amazon absent... Amazon continues to take a closed stance to personal agents (and standards around them). How long can they reasonably holdout?
