NY-based Reflection unveils Beam, an open model it claims rivals GLM 5.2 on reasoning while using 3x-4x less compute and approaches Qwen3.8-Max on agentic tasks

Reflection AI, the startup billing itself as America's answer to open-source Chinese AI, is releasing its first model, called Beam.

Semafor

Context & Ripple Effects

Reflection AI emerged from stealth in 2025 with funding and an ambition to pursue autonomous coding agents; Beam is the startup’s first concrete model release against that agent-focused strategy. Its arrival also turns an anticipated October wave of Western open-weight launches into a direct product comparison with Chinese open-weight models.

The competitive set was already narrowing around coding-oriented open models: Poolside’s Laguna S 2.1 release was positioned for agentic coding and long-horizon work. Beam’s claimed compute efficiency makes deployment cost, alongside benchmark quality, part of that contest.

First-order effects

  • Reflection AI gains a released open-weight model for developers evaluating coding and agentic workloads, rather than relying on its stated ambitions or fundraising plans.
  • Beam directly challenges Chinese open-weight models and Poolside for teams seeking a high-performing coding model with lower claimed compute requirements.

Second-order effects

  • Poolside and other Western open-weight developers face pressure to substantiate coding-agent performance and the compute needed to run their models, not merely headline model scale.
  • For adopters, a credible lower-compute option can shift model selection toward total deployment requirements, especially where coding agents must run repeatedly.

Third-order effects

  • If multiple Western releases meet their performance claims, open-weight AI competition will increasingly center on efficient inference and agent-workflow reliability rather than access to model weights alone.
  • The pattern points to a more geographically diverse open-weight ecosystem, with Western developers seeking to reduce reliance on Chinese frontier releases for deployable coding models.

The trend: Open-weight AI is becoming a contest to pair frontier coding-agent capability with an inference cost profile developers can operationalize.

Today, we're introducing Beam, @reflection_ai's first model. We started the high-compute RL team in February. Looking back at these past few months, it's remarkable how far we've come. Making RL work at this scale took careful science, scalable infrastructure, and a strong founda…

First model release from Reflection is out, and quite impressive. America can and should push the frontier on both closed and open models, it's not an either/or.

This is a bit impromptu but some thoughts are in order, this feels quite a triumphant moment personally and for the team. The technical stuff, we'll get to; but the thing I'm feeling in this moment after months of harder work than I could have ever imagined is how everyone else o…

Flash models are where the volume is. DeepSeek V4.1 Flash and GLM 5.3 Flash lead OpenRouter's 30-day token rankings. The models people actually deploy deserve more attention. This is why Reflection's Beam matters. It has 501B total parameters but activates only 23B per token. Ref…

Congrats to Reflection for launching their first model! It took a while but they got there😄 Looks like a GLM-5.2-level model, perhaps the best American open-source model? Weights will be released soon... Overall, it's great to have another strong open-source player in the US

Reflection joins the list of Nvidia & Thinking Machines who have released their strongest models and come up behind Chinese counterparts. There's a lot of ways people will overthink this, but the clearest takeaway should be that the Chinese are very very good at building LLMs.
