Google says free Gemini users will be limited to the 3.5 Flash-Lite model from October 9, while Plus subscribers will be limited to 3.5 Flash-Lite and 3.6 Flash

Following the compute-based usage change in May, Google will soon introduce limits on which Gemini models free users and AI Plus subscribers can access.

9to5Google Abner Li

Context & Ripple Effects

Google had already shifted Gemini usage limits to a compute-based system in May. The October policy adds a model-access boundary to that framework, concentrating the broadest user base on the Flash-Lite family.

The move follows Google's effort to position smaller Flash variants around lower cost and latency, including the March launch of Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite and July pricing that placed 3.5 Flash-Lite below 3.6 Flash for API use.

First-order effects

  • From October 9, free Gemini users lose access to models beyond 3.5 Flash-Lite, while AI Plus is restricted to 3.5 Flash-Lite and 3.6 Flash.
  • Google can channel free-tier inference toward its lower-cost Flash-Lite model family rather than making broader model access the default.

Second-order effects

Third-order effects

  • If Google continues pairing usage limits with model-specific gates, consumer AI plans will be structured around allocating scarce or costly inference by tier, not merely capping message volume.
  • The policy points toward frontier-model access governance becoming a core product-control mechanism alongside model release cadence and pricing.

The trend: Consumer AI subscriptions are moving from broadly shared model access with usage caps toward capacity-aware catalogs that reserve stronger models for selected tiers.

At least they're honest enough to say publicly that they want everyone to go fuck themselves.

Incredible downfall that needs to be studied. Google doesn't even have a consumer released leading model and they're doing stuff like this, which is nuts.

@GeminiUpda0kkb But i thought google is the only generous company who offers free pro models to certain limits atleast for users.🥲

@GeminiUpda0kkb I guess I'll cancel my subscription. Thank you, @GeminiApp

can't wait to buy AI Ultra to use gemini 3.1 pro 🙏🙏🙏

Some changes to the @GoogleDeepMind Gemini plans: The Gemini Pro models will only be available for Pro and Ultra plans, but not in the cheaper Plus plan. This is clearly a step in preparation of the upcoming Gemini 4 Argon model, which is more expensive to run.

@GeminiUpda0kkb Just cancelled my Google AI Plus sub because of this. You sold us Pro access then quietly downgrade us to Lite on Oct 9? That's not an “update” it's bait-and-switch. Who else is cancelling?
  • @flyingcedseg Cédric on x
@GeminiUpda0kkb You should have waited that people actually tried and liked Gemini 4 before to do that. People won't just switch from claude or openai without actually knowing if they can work with it .

@GeminiUpda0kkb I'm going to cancel the license and switch to another model. I subscribed to Plus because you promised Pro. Don't try to pull this bait-and-switch on me now.

Google: not only do we have the worst models, now we also have the worst subscriptions!

Google is changing Gemini model access starting Oct 9: • Free → Flash-Lite only • AI Plus → loses Pro models, Flash only • AI Pro & Ultra → retain access to Pro models

So on top of being completely behind on frontier models and never managing to fix the reliability issue where the model acts normal sometimes and like a complete fucking moron the rest of the time, they're doing this now too. Well, I guess I praised them too soon when they announ…
