Meta announces Muse Gadgets, providing an open source ESP32 microchip firmware and a Linux SDK to let users bring Muse to their hardware, like Raspberry Pi 5

The company created its own smart home device, the Muse Home Link  —  We still don't know too much about Meta's tamagotchi-like AI device …

Engadget Karissa Bell

Context & Ripple Effects

Muse began as a US personal AI agent running in a dedicated Meta cloud VM, with planned support for Meta AI glasses. The initial Muse launch established the service layer before Meta started defining physical interfaces for it.

Meta then previewed the palm-sized Muse Charm device, while its earlier plan to open-source a version of Muse Spark signaled an interest in making parts of the stack available beyond Meta’s own products. Muse Gadgets extends that approach from a single device into firmware and SDKs for third-party hardware.

First-order effects

  • Developers can use Meta’s open-source ESP32 firmware and Linux SDK to connect compatible self-built hardware, including Raspberry Pi-class devices, to Muse.
  • Meta’s Muse Home Link gives the agent a dedicated bridge to home-networked devices such as TVs and speakers, adding a company-built reference point alongside community hardware.

Second-order effects

  • Muse’s hardware reach no longer depends solely on Meta shipping Charm or integrating the agent into its own glasses; builders can test displays, badges, and smart-home controls as alternative interfaces.
  • Hardware makers and DIY-device communities gain a route to differentiate products through Muse compatibility, while Meta gains more potential endpoints for its cloud-hosted agent.

Third-order effects

  • If third-party devices gain traction, Muse can become a hardware-agnostic agent layer: Meta supplies the cloud service and developer tooling while external builders supply specialized form factors.
  • The model shifts competition in AI hardware toward the quality of device integration and developer ecosystems, rather than ownership of a single flagship gadget.

The trend: Personal AI agents are expanding from standalone apps and proprietary devices into ambient, multi-device interfaces built through open hardware toolkits.
