OpenAI announces new features for Codex, including reusable cloud development environments, a refreshed Codex CLI, and a new code review experience

OpenAI introduced new capabilities for its software engineering agent Codex, making it more useful beyond a developer's laptop …

TechCrunch Sarah Perez

Context & Ripple Effects

Codex began as an API private beta that powered GitHub Copilot, then became a software-engineering agent for ChatGPT Pro, Enterprise, and Team users in 2025. OpenAI’s April 2026 desktop-app expansion added computer control, browser access, automation memory, and plugins, broadening the agent beyond code generation.

Reusable cloud environments extend that progression from a developer’s device to a persistent work surface that can carry a repository, dependencies, and scripts across sessions. The refreshed CLI and review workflow put task execution and inspection alongside that environment rather than treating them as separate tools.

First-order effects

  • Software teams using Codex can preserve development setup in OpenAI-hosted environments, reducing the need to recreate a local machine configuration when resuming agent work.
  • Codex users gain updated terminal and code-review surfaces, concentrating editing, execution, and review in the same product family.

Second-order effects

  • OpenAI’s Codex proposition becomes less dependent on a developer keeping a laptop available, making persistent environment state a differentiator for teams selecting an engineering agent.
  • Teams that standardize on Codex cloud environments may move repository setup, dependencies, and review routines into OpenAI’s workflow, raising the value of interoperability with their existing development processes.

Third-order effects

  • If persistent cloud environments become the default substrate for coding agents, software development tools will compete less as isolated editors or assistants and more as end-to-end delivery control planes.
  • The shift from the 2025 Codex agent rollout to cloud-resident work suggests that agent adoption will increasingly depend on durable execution context, not only model output quality.

The trend: AI coding products are evolving from local assistants into cloud-based agent work surfaces that retain context and execute work across devices.

Did EVERYONE black out at the mention of “AWS?”

Start a task in the cloud, then follow its progress and steer Codex from your phone or another computer, even with your laptop off. We're also bringing the familiar desktop app experience to web and mobile. [video]
  • @borismpower Boris Power on x
Finally, Codex is in the cloud - no need for my laptop to constantly be on. Obviously the right decision!
  • @openaidevs @openaidevs on x
You can finally close your laptop now and your agents will keep working. Codex cloud environments are here. Reusable environments mean less setup and faster starts, with your repo, dependencies, scripts, and settings already in place. [video]

With Codex moving to the cloud, I think part of what I wrote in my M5 Ultra report is important to reiterate. That thing has an incredible CPU, as well as GPU, and if I can delegate to it from anywhere, it has far more value than just a GPU for inference on my desk

Decisions API, for lightning fast constrained decision making powered by Luna. Supports visual inputs, and tuned to be able to make decisions in less than a few hundreds of milliseconds end to end.
  • @jjacky Jacky on x
it's official “decisions” has won out - openai has chose it (been a “decisions” fan since day 0)
  • @wesbos Wes Bos on x
curious if this is just an API wrapped on Luna? Luna is VERY cheap, but not Jev cheap Image inputs is great though, I've had it process images for $0.001
  • @airesearch12 Florian S on x
It was obvious, but f*ck that happened fast. Ok, so now I'll have to benchmark it, and I'll do so pretty fast. If anyone at @OpenAI can give me early/free access, to put it on JevBench, it would be appreciated. /cc @sama

New decisions API from OpenAI powered by giving Luna model a predefined set of options to choose from! Looks really good. Congrats to the Jev team for creating a new category too😉

  • @bendee983 Ben Dickson on x
OpenAI (and probably Anthropic and DeepMind) coming after Jev with their own decision model (aka System One Model) was an obvious and predictable outcome. However, this doesn't necessarily mean that Jev will be eliminated, because: 1) It was created by one of the former crack eng…

  • @emollick Ethan Mollick on x
It does feel like every year OpenAI releases a variation on the same third-party ecosystem only to semi-abandon it: Plugins in 2023, GPTs and the GPT Store in 2023-2024, Apps in 2025, and now Plugins (same name, different thing than before) in 2026.

It's moves like this OpenAI feels to be pulling ahead of Anthropic. Anthropic is closed everything: closed source Claude Code, no you cannot use other models with CC, and so on. OpenAI: Codex is open source, you can use other models; oh let's make it dead simple to use GLM-5.3:
