Jensen Huang took a surprise call from Trump onstage at the All-In Summit on Monday in Los Angeles, where the two agreed that AI safety worries are overblown
Mr. Trump called Jensen Huang, Nvidia's chief executive, while Mr. Huang was onstage in Los Angeles and criticized calls to slow down and regulate A.I.
New York Times
Context & Ripple Effects
Huang has made Nvidia’s role in U.S. AI competition a central part of his engagement with Trump, from praising the administration’s policy agenda at Nvidia’s Washington conference to joining the president’s China trip in May 2026. He also said in July that his role was to inform the president on export rules, not to claim credit for changing policy.
The onstage call turns that access into a public alignment over the pace of AI development. It lands alongside Huang’s separate comments against new AI laws at a Salesforce event, making Nvidia’s policy posture unusually visible.
First-order effects
- Trump’s rejection of an AI slowdown gives Nvidia a prominent presidential platform for its argument that rapid AI deployment should not be constrained by new federal rules.
- Huang’s decision to put the call onstage reinforces Nvidia’s position as a company with direct access to an administration framing AI progress as a national-competition issue.
Second-order effects
- AI companies and advocates pressing for a slowdown or new safeguards face a clearer political counterweight: Trump has publicly cast restraint as inconsistent with the U.S. AI race.
- Nvidia’s rivals in AI infrastructure must contend with a policy debate in which access to government and national-interest framing can be as visible as product positioning.
Third-order effects
- If this alignment persists, AI governance may be shaped less by broad precautionary rules and more by state-mediated industrial policy that favors continued buildout and strategic competitiveness.
- The episode points to leading compute suppliers becoming regular participants in AI policy formation, tying hardware strategy more tightly to presidential priorities.
The trend: AI policy is becoming a contest between safety-led governance demands and a state-backed competitiveness agenda in which compute suppliers hold growing influence.

The way that Anthropic and OpenAI are going to “pace” the frontier is by spending more time and more *compute* on alignment, monitoring and evals. The frontier labs that choose to “pace” likely spend slightly more money on compute at the cost of lower margins. That's it.
