Amazon partners with OpenAI to let advertisers buy ChatGPT ads via Amazon DSP as a managed service in a US-only pilot; OpenAI will control ad delivery decisions

Conversational ads inventory will be available as a managed service via Amazon DSP, but OpenAI will handle placement through its own systems.

Marketing Dive Peter Adams

Context & Ripple Effects

OpenAI’s ad business moved from select advertiser commitments to more than 600 advertisers and $100 million in annualized revenue by March, then opened a US Ads Manager beta for cost-per-click buying in May. The Amazon arrangement adds a second demand channel rather than simply expanding OpenAI’s self-serve tool.

With ChatGPT Ads reported at $1 billion in annual recurring revenue, OpenAI is broadening advertiser access while preserving control of the delivery layer. That division matters: Amazon DSP supplies the buying relationship, but OpenAI determines where conversational ads appear.

First-order effects

  • Amazon DSP advertisers gain a US-only managed route to buy ChatGPT inventory without OpenAI handing Amazon control over ad placement.
  • OpenAI adds Amazon’s advertiser base as a source of demand while keeping delivery decisions inside its own systems.

Second-order effects

  • The pilot creates parallel access routes—OpenAI’s Ads Manager and Amazon DSP managed service—so advertisers can choose between direct self-serve buying and DSP-led campaign management.
  • Amazon DSP strengthens its role as a buyer-side gateway for emerging conversational inventory, while OpenAI retains the optimization and inventory-control functions that determine ad delivery.

Third-order effects

  • If this model is extended, conversational advertising may separate demand aggregation from delivery decisioning: DSPs bring budgets, while AI platforms keep control over context, placement, and user experience.
  • That structure would make access to AI ad inventory a distribution partnership question rather than a standard open-exchange integration.

The trend: AI advertising is moving toward distribution-led monetization, with platforms opening buying access through established ad-tech channels while retaining control of conversational ad delivery.

Additionally, as it stands, a lot of post-Chat intent is absorbed by (and attributed to) Google search. It's far preferable for OpenAI to refer intent to Amazon via an adtech story than leach it immeasurably to their arch-rival

Amazon brings its ad machine to ChatGPT In December 2025, I predicted that Amazon would bring its advertisers to ChatGPT. Today, it announced such a partnership. I think this was foreseeable at that time for three reasons. First, Amazon had already pursued a similar model with Me…
