Review: GPT-6 Astra can adeptly use tools like Unreal Engine to build complex environments, such as a civilization with Unreal's autonomous MetaHuman characters

Everyday work, ambitious experiments, and the Manager Loop. … For nearly a year, OpenAI models were my unquestioned default …

Something Big Is Happening Matt Shumer

Context & Ripple Effects

OpenAI introduced GPT-6 Astra first through its Daybreak program, framing it as a major advance in agentic capability. The accompanying claims of computer-use performance on appointment and housing searches put the Unreal Engine examples in a broader pattern: the model is being positioned to operate software, not merely generate text or images.

The review extends that claim into 3D production, where Unreal Engine and MetaHuman workflows demand coordinated work across a complex toolchain. It also builds on a pre-existing shift in which more accessible development tools let smaller teams pursue projects once associated with larger productions.

First-order effects

  • Unreal Engine creators can use GPT-6 Astra to assemble complex environments and MetaHuman-driven simulations through the editor, reducing the amount of manual tool operation required for early world-building work.
  • OpenAI's Astra evaluation is tested against a demanding creative-software workflow rather than only browser tasks, broadening the practical definition of computer use.

Second-order effects

  • Small studios and indie developers gain a stronger route to prototype larger scenes and autonomous-character concepts, making iteration speed a more important differentiator than team size for some projects.
  • Unreal's value as a production environment rises when an agent can navigate its tools effectively; creators will assess AI models by reliable completion inside the engine, not just by generated assets.

Third-order effects

  • If tool-using agents prove dependable across creative applications, development stacks may be organized around agents that execute multi-step workflows while human teams set direction, review output, and integrate the work.
  • The pattern points toward workflow-native AI competing on software-operating reliability and controllability, with complex professional tools becoming an important distribution surface.

The trend: Agentic AI is moving from producing individual creative assets to executing coordinated work inside professional software environments.

I had an early access to GPT-6 Astra and I can say, everyone in the world now has a 3D designer at their fingertips. I gave it an image of a house and asked to create it in 3D with all the details including toys, appliances and furniture. This a full 3D model reconstruction in Bl…

GPT-6 Astra recreated the Palace of Fine arts in Blender.  This is favorite building in San Francisco because it was built for the World's Fair in 1914 where the steam locomotive and telephone were showed off.  It was a time when technology gave us all a deep sense of optimism fo…

I had early access to GPT-6. This model will completely shatter your understanding of what's possible, and it will start a new era of creativity. It's hard to explain how big of a jump this is, so I'll share my tests. 1/6 Made this 3D model and animation in code from an image.

GPT-6 Astra built this Manhattan world in Unreal Engine over the course of a week. It was literally able to go street by street to make each one perfect.

My first “holy shit” moment with GPT-6 Astra: I asked it to create a world in Unreal Engine, and fill it with humans (each an Astra-powered agent) who all have to work together to survive.  A day later, I was in my bedroom and heard voices coming from the living room... I thought…

Astra is very good at 3D modeling, and I can't wait for all of you to experience it, for now here is a little walkthrough on how I built the demo house for our launch blog post. From a Blender scene to a Unreal Engine 5 walkable experience. 🧵

I guess we're allowed to talk about it now... Astra has absolutely blown my mind. I did get early access to test it out and it's definitely felt like the biggest leap we've seen in a long time! I asked it to make me a humanoid wolf in Blender, it used computer use, took control o…

GPT-6 Astra hit a record 169 on Epoch AI's capability index, jumping 6 points past the previous ceiling and setting separate records across math, continual learning, and game puzzles. This benchmark ECI combines scores from more than 50 benchmarks into one capability scale, reduc…

You can literally drop a pin on a map ask GPT-6 to recreate the area around it in 3D and it will just do that lol

This seems importantly wrong in the second paragraph. A monitor forcing you to not put some info in the CoT does not make the CoT useless to you. You can otherwise use the CoT for its usual purposes, without explicit reasoning about the misaligned part. Humans do this often.

Token crowdfunding would be an incredible unlock for mega-projects like this. With enough tokens, I'd bet Astra could build a world-scale GTA-style game. Imagine if everyone could contribute their tokens... people would be able to build unbelievable things.

I asked GPT-6 Astra to make a portfolio inside a console similar to a Gameboy and LOOK AT THIS It's so so so good, a huge jump from GPT-5.6

GPT-6 Astra is a beast. Give it a Zillow listing. It can 3D model the house based on the listing photos and create a cool promotion video. The video was just created in one shot and there are still some wrong details. But I am sure it will be much better if I ask it to polish fur…

So how good really is GPT-6 Astra at 3D modeling? I took an old drawing of a steam train, gave it to Astra to reconstruct it in Blender. After few minutes it crafted 3,295 fully editable detailed objects with beautiful geometry. You can obviously tell it how detailed or simplifie…

Astra's 3D work has been blowing my mind. Thomas went from a floor plan to a Blender scene to a house you can walk around in Unreal Engine 5. Even the coffee machine works! 🤯 See how he built it in the thread. We're working hard to bring Astra to you all as soon as possible.

Not to downplay Astra. But I am somewhat unimpressed by these 3D models. What is the purpose or economic value of any of this? A video of your living room?
  • @pvncher Eric Provencher on x
Thomas and I have been going back and forth on pushing Astra harder and harder on 3D asset assembly and modeling tasks. I never would have believed even 3 months ago, that an LLM could do this, but here we are.

Now the top LLM can use Blender.  The pencil was raised by an AI, not an AI user, but the result is the same.
