Google releases Gemini 3.8 Flash, three weeks after Gemini 3.7 Flash, for an introductory price of $0.75/1M input and $3.75/1M output tokens until December 31

After the last model release three weeks ago, Google today is rolling out Gemini 3.8 Flash.  This marks the third Flash update in three months.

9to5Google Abner Li

Context & Ripple Effects

Google had already reset Flash pricing with Gemini 3.6 Flash’s lower token rates, then introduced Gemini 3.7 Flash in August at $0.75 per million input tokens and $3.75 per million output tokens. Gemini 3.8 arrives three weeks later at those same introductory rates, extending a sequence of frequent model revisions rather than another price cut.

Google’s public launch messaging places 3.8 Flash in AI Mode and the Gemini app for AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, while Sundar Pichai characterized the update as improving software engineering, agentic tasks, and multistep reasoning. The broad same-day pickup shows the release cadence itself has become part of the story.

First-order effects

  • Google API customers receive a newer Flash option without a higher introductory per-token rate than the August 3.7 Flash launch, through December 31.
  • Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers gain 3.8 Flash in Google’s AI Mode and Gemini app, tying the model refresh directly to Google’s owned consumer surfaces.

Second-order effects

  • Stable 3.7-to-3.8 token pricing shifts the comparison for developers toward task performance and release-management overhead, rather than a new list-price premium for the newer Flash model.
  • Google’s Search and Gemini teams can use the faster Flash release cycle as a product-refresh lever, while customers building on the API must evaluate models more frequently.

Third-order effects

  • If Google sustains rapid Flash revisions at steady or lower token prices, the commercially relevant model may become a moving performance-and-cost frontier rather than a long-lived API SKU.
  • The pattern strengthens the importance of effective inference cost: providers’ advantage depends on delivering better agent and coding output without raising the per-token bill for buyers.

The trend: Fast, price-disciplined model refreshes are making inference economics and deployment cadence central competitive variables for AI platforms.

I don't think people understand just how risky it is to try and use their Google Gemini subscriptions outside of Google's official surfaces. You can get your ENTIRE GOOGLE ACCOUNT BANNED. OpenAI or Anthropic ban? Annoying but whatever Google account ban? Legit life ruining.

Gemini 3.8 flash is a big improvement over 3.7, especially in terms of user satisfaction. Double-digit lift in the percentage of explicit user praise. Also better at steerability and bash. It's cool to see that models can still see a raw 20% jump in performance these days.

Gemini 3.8 Flash scores 62.3% on the Vals Index, fifth behind Fable 5.1, Opus 5, Fable 5, and GPT-5.6 Sol. 3.8 Flash is within 5pts from the leader at a fraction of the price - putting it on the Pareto frontier.
