YouTube plans to start counting a view as soon as a video plays from August 24, lining up with the system used by Instagram, TikTok, and its Shorts videos

By tracking views from the instant a video starts to play, YouTube's new counter works more like TikTok, X, and Instagram.

The Verge Emma Roth

Context & Ripple Effects

YouTube had already treated Shorts as a distinct measurement environment in its guidance on how Shorts views are counted. Instagram then made views its primary cross-format metric, and Facebook followed with a screen-appearance definition of a view, creating a clear platform-wide move toward a common exposure measure.

First-order effects

  • YouTube’s reported view counts will begin registering video starts immediately, bringing its long-form measurement convention into line with Shorts, TikTok, and Instagram.
  • Creators and viewers comparing YouTube videos with Shorts will see counts based on the same basic trigger: playback beginning rather than a longer viewing threshold.

Second-order effects

  • Instagram and Facebook’s earlier shift to views across formats becomes a more direct benchmark for YouTube, making headline view totals easier to compare across major video platforms.
  • Creators distributing the same video across YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram gain a more consistent top-line reach metric, while older YouTube counts become less directly comparable with the new measure.

Third-order effects

  • If platforms continue converging on instant-play counting, public view totals will increasingly function as an exposure metric rather than a platform-specific indicator of how long audiences stayed with a video.
  • The change reinforces the measurement model established by Facebook’s view-first reporting, concentrating competition around comparable scale signals across short- and long-form video.

The trend: Major video platforms are standardizing public views around playback starts, making cross-platform reach totals more comparable across formats.

Starting 8/24, views will count the moment a video begins to play (w/ no minimum watch time) across all formats (VOD, Shorts, & Live).  We're standardizing views to reflect creators' true exposure across YouTube, making it easier to show their value to brand partners.  This updat…

I get why they're doing it though. I had a brand decline working with me because “you only get 100,000 views, this other guy is half your price and gets 70,000 views” The “other guy” was getting those views on X, where “views” count API responds with your post ID.

YouTube is moving to an exposure-based model for views across all formats, meaning a view will now be counted the moment a video begins to play - from the very first frame Last year, YouTube moved to an exposure-based model for Shorts views. This year, starting August 24th,

fwiw re: youtube views update: theoretically makes “engaged” views inline with premium while “views” is synonymous with bullshit like instagram and tiktok, is another move in this direction of higher cpm long form ads (blue chip, CTV) and programmatic shit ads in your shorts feed

Sweet, can't wait to be tricked into clicking YouTube links because it's now financially incentivized.
  • @theo @theo on x
I don't like this change. YouTube view counts are the only view counts that mean anything.
  • @vidiq @vidiq on x
@ColinandSamir A potential fix: let creators toggle it on upload, like when Instagram did with likes in 2021. Small channels get to skip the “250 views? nah” behaviors, and big channels keep their credibility of their public-facing view counts.

If you read the fine print, the old view metric isn't going anywhere. It'll just be called “Engaged Views” from now on. Great news for channels with sponsors, though.

At this point, a platform giant publicly stating “yep, we're gonna start juicing the stats so we can make some more money” feels refreshingly honest. Bleak lol

Congratulations. You just made view counts a worthless metric like impressions

This is a big shift for YouTube. View-counts losing a lot of value as a metric there.

absolutely monumental shift that (should) reverabte across the industry. Managers, agents, brands, reps, and agencies will all have to recalibrate.

Bad idea. The minimum watch time was what made a YouTube view mean more than an equivalent on TikTok or the Zuck platforms. Now it'll just mean something you've scrolled past rather than something you've engaged with.

I don't like this for YouTube It makes sense for Instagram/X, you are consuming static content (text and images), scrolling by could be enough to retain it. When it comes to videos, you need to actually watch it. This makes no sense except boosting view numbers.
  • @colinandsamir @colinandsamir on x
Should YouTube just hide views altogether? Does a video with 250 views turn you away? What about 40 million? These are questions we're asking ourselves this week as we head towards more videos with more views than ever
  • @mws Muaaz on x
YouTubers are about to start seeing HIGHER VIEW COUNTS Starting next week YouTube will count a ‘View’ from the SECOND a video starts playing They only did this on Shorts, but now will on Long Form videos too Your original (Engaged) ‘View’ count will be in your analytics still

Seems like a bad idea. Part of the reason YouTube feels so premium to sponsors is because you can be confident in the view count methodology.

Welcoming back clickbait and view botting I guess?
  • @thecaptainsauce CaptainSauce on x
They implemented a viewcount threshold to disincentivize clickbait. Views are going increase by 30%-40% on every video and clickbait will be further rewarded solely because YouTube wants bigger numbers to pitch to investors.

View counts are dead on YouTube, and now a view = an impression, which is how it's been on every other platform for a while.
