Google unveils Gemini 3.7 Flash, its “most intelligent workhorse model” for coding and agents, pricing it at $0.75/1M input and $3.75/1M output tokens at launch

Our most intelligent workhorse model yet for coding and agents.  —  Senior Director, Product Management, on behalf of the Gemini team

Google Tulsee Doshi

Context & Ripple Effects

Google’s Flash line has been moving toward lower-cost, higher-capability inference: Gemini 3.6 Flash cut its input and output rates to $1.50 and $7.50 per million tokens in July, while Google said that release also used up to 17% fewer tokens than 3.5 Flash. Gemini 3.7 extends that pricing trajectory while explicitly targeting coding and agent workloads.

The change matters because agents generate repeated input and output over multi-step tasks; lowering both token rates changes the operating economics for developers building on Gemini rather than merely reducing the cost of a one-off prompt.

First-order effects

  • Gemini API customers can use the new coding-and-agent-focused Flash model at launch rates of $0.75 per million input tokens and $3.75 per million output tokens—half the published 3.6 Flash rates.
  • Google’s own Flash portfolio gains a sharper split: 3.7 becomes the workhorse option for coding and agents, while the lower-priced 3.5 Flash-Lite remains the budget tier.

Second-order effects

  • Developers running agent workflows have a stronger incentive to move workloads from 3.6 Flash to 3.7 Flash, making Google’s relevant comparison the cost of a completed task rather than token price alone.
  • The lower 3.7 rates narrow the room for Google to charge a premium for older Flash variants, increasing pressure to differentiate them through capability, efficiency, or tiering.

Third-order effects

  • If successive Flash releases continue to pair stronger agent performance with lower published rates, model providers’ competition will increasingly center on token efficiency alongside coding and multimodal performance, not only benchmark quality.
  • Agent software economics would become more sensitive to inference efficiency: providers that reduce both tokens consumed and token prices can support more multi-step automation at a given customer budget.

The trend: Frontier-model vendors are turning efficient, lower-priced inference into a core lever for making coding agents economically viable at scale.
