Rockstar says it will show an “extended look” at Grand Theft Auto VI on August 27, premiering on Netflix at 3pm ET before streaming on YouTube at 9pm ET

The preview will stream on both Netflix and YouTube. … We'll be getting an in-depth preview of Grand Theft Auto VI very soon …

The Verge Andrew Webster

Context & Ripple Effects

Rockstar has moved from its first GTA VI trailer to a second trailer described as entirely captured in-game, then opened pre-orders ahead of this new showcase. The August stream is the next marketing beat after a release schedule that Rockstar pushed from fall 2025 to May 2026.

Netflix receives the first stream at 3 p.m. ET, while YouTube gets the same preview at 9 p.m. ET. That sequencing matters because related Nielsen data show YouTube with the larger daytime audience, while prime-time viewing between the two services is more evenly divided.

First-order effects

  • Netflix gets a six-hour first-window for one of Rockstar's largest promotional events, giving its subscribers the initial place to watch the extended preview.
  • YouTube becomes the later, prime-time distribution outlet, preserving Rockstar's access to its broad video audience after the Netflix premiere.

Second-order effects

  • Netflix and YouTube are competing for different parts of the same launch-day attention: Netflix gains an early-event draw, while YouTube's evening stream is positioned for a more evenly matched prime-time audience.
  • The presentation gives Rockstar a new conversion moment after pre-orders went live, concentrating fresh gameplay detail and purchase intent around a single cross-platform event.

Third-order effects

  • If major game publishers continue splitting premiere windows between subscription streamers and open video platforms, game marketing will increasingly treat entertainment services as timed distribution partners rather than simply trailer hosts.
  • The model favors platforms that can pair a temporary premiere advantage with mass reach elsewhere, making release-event scheduling part of the competition between streaming and video services.

The trend: Major game launches are becoming cross-platform media events, with publishers sequencing exclusive streaming windows and open-video distribution to maximize attention across the day.

I am so glad this wasn't shadow dropped but instead they gave us notice 3 weeks in advance, we are finally and I mean FINALLY in GTA 6 marketing. Also HUGE W that they have made the choice to skip Trailer 3 altogether and go with a gameplay trailer instead!

Today has shown me that somehow people still do not grasp how big GTA 6 really is. If GTA 6's gameplay had premiered on YouTube then Rockstar would be doing a service to YouTube. That is how big the release of this game is. Google would pay them the same way that Netflix is. It

GTA 6 revenue has probably already exceeded the equivalent to one million units sold because of the Netflix deal. I doubt we'll get exact numbers, but it was a significant amount to make Take-Two take that deal.
