GPT-5.6 Sol, along with Terra and Luna, will launch publicly this Thursday. We're expanding preview access globally now. [image]

GPT 5.6 has *excellent* judgment, as an early tester I will vouch for this.

Can't wait! I had the chance to test GPT-5.6 Sol for a few weeks, and it's a very good model

i've been using gpt 5.6 sol ultra as my workhorse for some time, and what i can say right now is that it's a very, very good model if they launched this as gpt 6 i don't think anybody would really question it more to say on launch day

Sol is rising. It's a good model.

The model that beats Claude Mythos is launching on Thursday. OpenAI just officially announced GPT-5.6 Sol, + Terra + Luna will be available publicly this Thursday. Currently, OpenAI is gradually expanding preview access to these models worldwide. [image]

OpenAI have now given the green light for early testers to give some high-level thoughts on 5.6. As such, I'll have more to say later, but tl;dr, unlike recent iterations that I felt were incremental, 5.6 Sol has been a significant step up in math and coding capability.

I was an early tester of GPT-5.6 Sol. I was asked to not share demos until after launch but it is a very good model. It is of similar ability, but quite different feel, than Fable. Fable wants to go off and do work on its own pace, Sol is faster but works with you in steps more.

Gonna be a fun week 🫡

Prepare your sunglasses. Sol is coming. 😎

I can finally talk about 5.6. I've been testing it for months and, without exaggeration, it's the best model I've ever used. Fast, smart, genuinely creative, and you guessed it, they finally fixed front-end design. I haven't needed to check the code I've written in two months.

I had early access to GPT-5.6 Sol. It's an amazing model, but for almost every task I tested, Fable was quite a bit better, and more agentic to boot (one Fable turn does the same thing many 5.6 turns do). Full review coming on launch day!
  • @theo @theo on x
Apparently I'm allowed to talk about GPT-5.6 now? It's a damn good model. Not quite as “smart” as Fable, but it is incredibly capable. Fixed all the problems I had with GPT-5.5. It is incredibly determined. Will run for a day without even using a /goal. It understands subagents

GPT-5.6 Sol will shine across the world this Thursday. It's going to be another landmark day in the age of AI. I say this because I've been an early tester of Sol and Terra for some time, and I'll begin sharing some high-level experiences before the launch, today and tomorrow!
  • @theo @theo on x
I would like to add that OpenAI has been awesome to work with despite the obvious government-related setbacks. They've been more transparent than I'd ever have expected, and they did a good job keeping us in the loop during the confusion. The only “restriction” is that they've
  • @mweinbach Max Weinbach on x
I had early access to this model and I'll post more Thursday, but I think the most impressive part is this model NEVER GIVES UP If you throw it in Max reasoning, it will just keep working until it's done. GPT 5.6 Sol is my favorite model BY FAR.

My big takeaway is that both Sol & Fable represent jumps over previous models and have opened a large gap with the next-best AIs. People will have preferences for one or the other, but if you doing any work where better intelligence matters, those two models are your only choices
  • @acerfur @acerfur on x
Btw, I've never had such an enjoyable experience writing Lean as with 5.6 Sol Ultra. It's amazingly persistent and will run over 40 terminal commands consecutively if it needs to understand the codebase.

Finally can share that I have been testing GPT-5.6 early and oooo boy. It is an execution beast. So much so that I think 5.6 is the absolute wrong name considering how big of a leap this felt to me. The OpenAI models have always felt better at ideation and “work horse"ness

the chatgpt 5.5 personality is so much better than claude. none of this cloying sycophantic soulmd nonsense. it just helps me with real problems.
  • @thdxr Dax on x
i've never hyped a model release, we're generally conservative with how we use these things but gpt-5.6 has had a massive impact on our team, we're using 5x the tokens as we used to it's not even smarter than fable or anything, but it's just so reliable and fun to use

lol if a company thinks they need government approval to release an AI model... then they probably do!

@axios WH official also tells me OpenAI have been “excellent partners as we continue to work on security and innovation.”

@axios WH weighed in this morning, said working with them is voluntary, any decisions OpenAI made about release were up to them. [image]

I had early access to 5.6/Sol for ~month. Sol is my default. It is faster, plans/judges just as good as Fable, and I think produces better overall work. I'll reach for Fable still for highly targeted debug or performance work with clear reward functions. A cheeky way I describe
  • @shakeelhashim Shakeel on x
This directly contradicts what OpenAI has previously said. My read: the WH is trying to spin the new state of affairs as “not a licensing regime” even though it ... very clearly is a licensing regime. [image]
  • @hadas_gold Hadas Gold on x
... well sure but then what about an export control ban
  • @_nathancalvin Nathan Calvin on x
The US government told Axios this AM, regarding the 5.6 Sol release, that “no such permission [for model releases] is required or granted” and decisions about the scope of release “rest entirely with the companies.” That seems like a pretty different message from what was [image]

🚨 SCOOP(s): - GPT-5.6 will be the final model in the 5.x series. GPT-6 is slated to launch in about a month, earlier than expected, and possibly even later this month - GPT-6 will be based on a new, significantly larger pretrain (versus the ~4T 5.5/5.6 ‘Spud’ base) - There is
  • @kimmonismus @kimmonismus on x
Judging by all the GPT-5.6 Sol early-access posts, it sounds as though OpenAI has achieved the major leap we had been hoping for. GPT-5.6 is said to be better in every respect: eager, capable of working for long stretches, better at frontend tasks, and it essentially never gives

GLM-5.2 is close to Opus Grok 4.5 allegedly beats Opus and gpt-5.5 Meta even has something that's supposedly close to gpt-5.5 Feels like it barely matters now

The best proof that Fable and GPT-5.6 are “next generation” is the surge of other labs catching up to the previous generation
