Source: Xbox Game Pass currently has ~30M subscriptions; a years-old internal doc shows Microsoft had projected Game Pass subscriptions would reach ~77M in 2026
The videogame unit's revenue has fallen and its Netflix-like subscription service is far below expectations
Wall Street Journal Ben Fritz
Context & Ripple Effects
Game Pass grew from 18 million subscribers in early 2021 to 25 million in January 2022, and Microsoft later said the service was profitable and represented about 15% of Xbox content-and-services revenue. The newly reported level of roughly 30 million therefore indicates much slower net expansion than the earlier trajectory implied.
The gap is more consequential because an internal Microsoft projection put 2026 subscriptions at 77 million, while related coverage says a 2025 price increase was followed by losses of millions of subscribers. The report also ties this performance to falling videogame-unit revenue.
First-order effects
- Microsoft’s Game Pass business is operating at far less scale than its internal plan assumed, reducing the subscription base available to support Xbox’s content-and-services revenue.
- The reported post-price-hike subscriber losses make pricing a more immediate trade-off for Xbox: higher revenue per remaining subscriber can be offset by weaker customer retention and acquisition.
Second-order effects
- Xbox may face greater pressure to improve Game Pass economics through its game slate, tiers, pricing, and distribution rather than relying on subscriber-volume growth alone.
- Publishers and developers considering Game Pass distribution have a smaller-than-planned potential audience through the service, increasing scrutiny of the value of subscription deals relative to other release channels.
Third-order effects
- If slower growth persists, the game-subscription model may prove more viable as a retention and monetization layer for an existing platform audience than as the mass-market growth engine suggested by Netflix-like comparisons.
- The divergence between subscriber targets and results could push major game platforms toward more flexible hybrid models—subscriptions alongside individual sales and other service revenue—rather than treating subscriptions as the primary route to scale.
The trend: Game subscriptions are moving from growth-story expectations toward a harder test of whether price, content costs, and retention can produce durable platform economics.

Honestly? Made the best of a terrible situation. I won't undersell 3,200 layoffs. That's awful. However, no studios being shuttered, independent teams are given some funding, and Senua/State Of Decay 3 being finished are big “Ws” in today's cold industry.
