Sony says the PlayStation Store will stop offering movie and TV show purchases and rentals on Aug. 31, citing users' preference for video streaming services

As of Aug. 31, 2021, the PlayStation Store will stop offering movie and TV show purchases and rentals.

Variety Todd Spangler

Context & Ripple Effects

Sony had already withdrawn from subscription television with the shutdown of PlayStation Vue, and this ends a separate attempt to make the PlayStation Store a destination for à la carte screen entertainment. The stated rationale puts streaming services, rather than transactional rentals and purchases, at the center of users’ video habits.

The decision also sits early in a broader PlayStation distribution arc: later coverage shows Sony moving new games to digital-only sales and planning closures of legacy PlayStation stores, underscoring that a digital storefront does not guarantee every media category or catalog remains available indefinitely.

First-order effects

  • PlayStation Store customers will no longer be able to buy or rent movies and TV shows there after Aug. 31; Sony exits that transaction category while retaining the store for its other offerings.
  • Sony stops operating a video storefront whose model it says users have displaced with streaming services.

Second-order effects

  • Streaming services become the preferred alternative for PlayStation users seeking on-demand video, while Sony can concentrate its platform operations on categories it continues to support.
  • The exit sharpens the distinction between PlayStation as a game-commerce platform and PlayStation as a general entertainment storefront, following the earlier Vue service shutdown.

Third-order effects

  • Together with later moves toward digital-only games and legacy-store closures, the decision points to a platform model in which Sony curates a narrower set of digital categories and controls their lifecycle rather than maintaining a permanent all-media marketplace.
  • For buyers, the pattern makes digital library migration and service continuity central to the value of purchases made through platform stores.

The trend: PlayStation is moving away from operating broad video services and toward a more tightly managed, game-centered digital distribution ecosystem.

@IGN “According to Sony, the decision was made after observing “tremendous growth” from PlayStation fans using “subscription-based and ad-based entertainment streaming services,” such as Netflix, YouTube, Disney + and others.” https://twitter.com/...

@IGN I think this is not a good ideal I personally liked the movie rental option. Most of times those streaming services don't have access to the newer stuff outside of paying an astronomical fee. I think they need too keep the service going. But that's just my opinion
