Letter: the US says Anthropic “agreed to proactively detect and address security risks” of Fable 5 and Mythos 5; a source says Anthropic developed a “safeguard”

US government move allows AI start-up to re-release Mythos and Fable models

Financial Times

Context & Ripple Effects

The coverage traces a rapid shift from restricted access to staged restoration. The US first allowed Mythos 5 to reach more than 100 institutions and critical-infrastructure operators, while Fable 5 remained under discussion.

That partial reopening had already exposed a dependency concern among European political figures: access to key AI systems can change with US policy and vendor decisions. The reported safeguard now supplies the condition for restoring both models.

First-order effects

  • Anthropic can re-release Mythos 5 and Fable 5 under an arrangement requiring proactive detection and remediation of their security risks.
  • Institutions and operators that had lost or faced constrained access regain availability of the two models, while Anthropic takes on an ongoing security-management commitment.

Second-order effects

  • The reopening makes safeguards and active risk monitoring part of the practical route to deployment for high-consequence users, rather than a separate post-release consideration.
  • Customers that depend on externally controlled models remain exposed to access restrictions or conditions set by the provider and the US government, reinforcing the concerns raised in European coverage.

Third-order effects

  • If similar arrangements recur, frontier-model access may increasingly be governed through continuing security obligations and negotiated deployment conditions, not simply one-time launch approvals.
  • The episode points toward AI availability becoming a strategic-dependency issue: users and governments may place greater weight on control, continuity of access, and the jurisdiction governing model deployment.

The trend: This is one data point in the shift from broadly available frontier AI toward conditional access tied to ongoing security oversight and geopolitical control.

Anthropic has agreed to: 1. “proactively detect and address security risks associated with [Fable 5 and Mythos 5]” - How is Anthropic required to “proactively” detect these security risks? Not publicly disclosed. 2. work diligently with the [USG] on: (1) protocols and

Louder for the people in the back: > inform the USG of “any malicious activity” The surveillance state strikes again. Wait till you find out all the ADDITIONAL backdoors they've put into their model responses, triggered by their broken classifiers.

This is exactly what the gov was going for all along: A backdoor to every request you make to any LLM provider so they can analyze everything you do. OpenRouter and similar are next up. They will be required to do this for OS models for “safety reasons”. Dystopian AF.

Update, based on Anthropic's blog post: 1. Anthropic will work with Project Glasswing partners on a consensus framework for: (i) assessing the severity of AI jailbreaks, and (ii) how AI developers should respond to them. 2. Anthropic will provide to the USG early access to

The US government's standoff with Anthropic achieved something the AI industry thought was impossible: a pause in releasing the most powerful frontier models. Will it resets norms and expectations? https://www.thedeepview.com/ ...

We all knew this was going to happen. We're currently in a slight down beat for events so people are hyping this up like its exciting but this was priced in the minute they restricted it. On a meta level, still nothing ever happens.

Putting aside all the petty politics, drama and PR, we've reached the point at which AI can cause real-world damage—including and up to, being a national security threat. The industry needs to regulate itself, which @DarioAmodei and @AnthropicAI seemed to have done an excellent

My contrarian take on AI is that there's a second-mover advantage in the AI race, where America's wins are transient because China can “distill” and copy America's innovation to catch up. If America falls behind, this works in reverse: America could piggyback on China's lead.

This is great news. Hopefully going forward the US government and major labs can agree on a framework to be used for releasing new frontier models safely and efficiently. It's critical that the US stays at the forefront of AI both domestically and internationally.
