Qualcomm says it will acquire Modular, which builds a chip software platform and has a proprietary coding language, in a nearly $4B deal set to close in H2 2026
Qualcomm’s planned Modular purchase follows a broader pattern of buying capabilities around processor design and connectivity: its earlier Nuvia acquisition was intended to extend its technology across smartphones, laptops, and automotive processors, while Alphawave was considered for data-center and AI connectivity technology.
The deal also arrives as Qualcomm positions Dragonfly C1000 for agentic-AI data centers, forecasts rising non-handset revenue, and says Meta plans to use the processor when production begins. Modular’s software platform and proprietary language add a software-layer asset to that hardware expansion.

on one hand i'm stoked for @Qualcomm, they're getting, literally speaking, one of the best inference, compilers, and kernel team and stack in the world but...sad that this might cause it to converge from the world's only hardware-agnostic inference stack... to another hardware

This a great move for @Qualcomm. Not only does it get a great software platform that is legitimately one of the best for workload disaggregation, but also gets one of the best minds in AI software as part of the deal. Can't wait to hear what the company says about this today.
RIP, no future in Mojo now. Qualcomm is not a good steward for open source software. Modular raised too much money, should have stayed leaner to have a chance at winning.
