Salesforce agrees to acquire AI customer service platform Fin, formerly known as Intercom, for ~$3.6B, in a deal expected to close in Q4 of its 2027 fiscal year

CNBC Samantha Subin

Context & Ripple Effects

This follows Salesforce’s planned ~$8B Informatica acquisition, expected in its FY 2027, after earlier talks had stalled. Together, the transactions point to a strategy of adding both data-management capabilities and a customer-service AI product rather than relying solely on internally developed features.

Salesforce has also set a FY2030 revenue target above $60B excluding the pending Informatica deal, making acquisition-led expansion relevant to how it broadens its platform and growth mix.

First-order effects

  • If it closes in Q4 of Salesforce’s fiscal 2027, Fin becomes part of Salesforce’s customer-service software portfolio, giving Salesforce ownership of an AI-focused support platform.
  • Fin’s employees, product roadmap, and customer relationships would move under Salesforce’s product and commercial organization, subject to integration decisions.

Second-order effects

  • Salesforce customers using service tools would gain another potential AI-support option within Salesforce’s ecosystem, while Fin customers would need to assess product continuity, integration priorities, and commercial terms after closing.
  • The pairing of a service-AI acquisition with the pending Informatica deal increases pressure on competing enterprise-software vendors to show how their AI features connect to governed customer and operational data.

Third-order effects

  • If Salesforce can integrate these assets effectively, enterprise AI competition may shift further from standalone assistants toward integrated platforms that combine data infrastructure, workflow software, and customer-facing automation.
  • The deal also reinforces a consolidation path in which large cloud-software vendors acquire specialized AI products; its durable effect depends on whether acquired products retain differentiation after being folded into broader suites.

The trend: Enterprise software vendors are using acquisitions to assemble AI capabilities and the data foundations needed to deploy them across core business workflows.

Salesforce has been looking for an customer AI agent startup for a while. Also, Intercom is a 15-year-old older enterprise software startup that found success in adapting to the AI age and came out with Fin, its AI agent. Big win for its VCs who stuck along.
