SpaceX closes up 19% at $160.95 in its debut, with a ~$2.1T market value, after opening at $150, up 11% from its IPO price; Musk becomes the first trillionaire

SpaceX shares soared on Friday, propelling the rocket company's valuation above $2 trillion, as trading commenced on the Nasdaq …

CNBC Alex Harring

Context & Ripple Effects

The coverage traces SpaceX from a $75 billion IPO at $135 per share and a $1.77 trillion indicated value to its Nasdaq opening and subsequent trading. The debut gives public markets a liquid, continuously repriced stake in a company that had previously been valued through private financing.

Follow-on coverage already shows that the initial enthusiasm did not remove valuation risk: shares later fell for four consecutive sessions and briefly traded below the IPO price. Separately, SpaceX’s acquisition of xAI and legal challenges to its Colossus data centers place the listing alongside a broader push into AI-linked infrastructure.

First-order effects

  • SpaceX gains a public-market valuation of roughly $2.1 trillion after its first-day rise, while IPO buyers immediately hold an appreciated, tradable position.
  • Musk’s estimated wealth crosses the $1 trillion threshold as the market reprices his SpaceX stake.

Second-order effects

  • The public listing subjects SpaceX to daily price discovery rather than periodic private-market marks; the later move below the IPO price shows that the opening valuation will be contested by public investors.
  • A much larger public equity base can strengthen SpaceX’s financial flexibility around its expanding portfolio, but it also raises the visibility of execution and legal risks associated with xAI-linked products and Colossus data centers.

Third-order effects

  • If public investors continue to support valuations at this scale, the boundary between space companies and AI/infrastructure platforms may blur further, with capital markets rewarding companies that combine launch, communications, computing, and consumer-device ambitions.
  • The subsequent trading reversal suggests the structural shift will not eliminate scrutiny: public investors can rapidly reprice long-horizon infrastructure narratives when growth, capital needs, or regulatory and legal constraints become clearer.

The trend: SpaceX’s listing is a data point in the migration of capital-intensive space and AI-infrastructure ambitions from private-market financing toward public-market valuation and accountability.
