The US has one of the most progressive tax codes on paper. But our tax and transfer system reduces inequality far less than countries with broader tax systems. Tax cuts can't help people who don't have an income, but a generous tax financed welfare state can. [image]

This is a half truth. The top 1% is bankers, layers, small business owners, and highly paid employees and execs. They pay a very high effective tax rate. The super wealthy like Bezos, pay an extremely low effective tax rate, similar to a middle class family.

Jeff Bezos with straightforward simple logic. Bottom 50% pay no taxes + costs government 3%. Yet 100% life changing for this bottom half of America A smart and simple approach worth doing.

Jeff Bezos is openly advocating for income tax to be abolished for the bottom 50% of Americans. Great idea that would help millions of families who need it.

If you only count the progressive taxes the U.S. levies, then the U.S. system is quite progressive. But if you also count regressive taxes (payroll taxes, sales taxes, etc), it's not very progressive.

Thank you. The important part is zeroing out taxes on the bottom half. Best way to put money in someone's pocket is to not take it out in the first place. Bottom half is only 3% of total tax revenue. But it's very meaningful to that person. Zero it out.

Three men—Steve Jobs, Jeff Bezos, and Elon Musk—have made my life immeasurably better. And yet they're the bad guys. Are there billionaires who do not deserve their wealth? Sure. That's a small price to pay for those three and the many other billionaires who enrich our lives on a

Amazon is a very toxic organization; they flat-out stole more than 3 years' worth of royalties on my books, then deleted my account and all records of those royalties. Believe me, I'm not the only one. They're pirates.

Jeff Bezos' companies exploit taxpayers to be successful. They receive enormous tax breaks and subsidies, and force taxpayers to subsidize the poverty wages they pay their employees — driving their profitability. Paying your fair share in taxes isn't “charitable giving.”
  • @fuckyouiquit @fuckyouiquit on x
Then why are your employees pissing in bottles Jeff? If you gave a single shit about people you'd stop treating the people who make you insanely rich worse than cattle. Your actions speak louder than your bullshit words ever could.

A basic analysis shows that zeroing out federal taxes for the bottom half the USA would help millions, have minimal impact on tax receipts & add over $100 billion to the economy. It's easy to check this yourself with @grok & similar, great of @JeffBezos to highlight. [image]

Jeff Bezos is right, it's time to increase the standard deduction significantly. It's the best way to increase living standards for those who need it the most without the welfare trap.

America needs more of this kind of common sense. Why should Americans trust politicians with more tax revenue when they already have a track record of wasting the money and failing to solve problems? Billionaires aren't the enemy. Bad policies are.

This is what our society fails to comprehend. If I work as a physical therapist, and I'm good, I'll make $100,000/yr. And pay $15,000 in taxes. I can see 60 patients per week. But that's the end of it. No additional tax money, no more patients can get my services. I provide a

I wrote an essay about how we should eliminate income tax for the bottom half of Americans a few years ago. It would reduce an enormous burden on hundreds of millions of Americans and cost ~3% of government revenue. Jobs are the largest positive externality in the economy, yet

For decades, the top tax rate on the wealthiest Americans — like @JeffBezos — was much higher than it is today. What did we do with that money? We built roads and bridges, expanded healthcare, and invested in education. We grew the middle class. Care about economic growth? Tax

Jeff Bezos said the bottom half of Americans should pay zero federal income tax. He cited a nurse in Queens making ~$75K and paying ~$12K in taxes saying “we shouldn't be asking this nurse in Queens to send money to Washington.” [video]
