Expect Google search clicks to continue falling. The features that Google announced today give more reasons to use Google search but less reasons to go to websites. [image]

Excited for the annual interviews about to drop where Sundar Pichai explains how much he loves websites — more than one billion sites indexed each day — and that's why Google is effectively kneecapping all traffic to most sites today with the biggest Search update since launch.

Google's Liz Reid says agentic updates are good for websites because it'll reach the most obsessive people...and says it while showing AI Overview/Search pulling the most important information from said article and displaying it inside Google, where ads will move to!

Man, I know it's been happening for a hot minute, but it's a real bummer that the company that effectively created the open web is so dead set on killing it, all while benefitting from the inescapable monopoly it's built over the last quarter century.

Google is gonna get attacked for this but it's absolutely the right decision. Of every major company, Google has the most reason to use language models. They invented the transformer!! Organizing the world's information is literally their mission statement

It's truly bonkers that Google can build an AI that doesn't work, change the algorithm to make it seem successful, and simultaneously decimate the media industry.

Google search was one of the most simple, effective and successful products of the 21st century and to see the way Google have steadily deteriorated it over the last decade is astonishing.
  • @lvlstothis @lvlstothis on x
@Phil_Lewis_ What happens to the millions of websites that depend on Google SEO to even get their sites seen? Especially recipe and food blogs. This essentially makes so many sites obsolete after they've spent years playing Googles game to rise higher in search results. So awful.

On this side, user choice matters. All AI features at DuckDuckGo are optional and links aren't going anywhere on our search engine. (We also don't spy on you, but that's a whole other thing.)

Google just announced agentic coding in search. Based on your search, Gemini processes your ask, decides whether it should build a new interface, reasons through the steps, and creates a personalized interface for you. It's powered by Antigravity. Sort of like artifacts. [image]
