Google teases Android Halo, which makes an AI agent's status visible via “subtle communication” at the top of the phone screen, coming later this year

At Google IO, we were given a tease of an upcoming “Android Halo” feature that, at least on first glance, isn't clear how or what it will do.

Google’s Android coverage has moved from embedding Gemini in individual surfaces such as Messages and Android Auto toward a broader migration of Assistant to Gemini. Google has also said that migration will extend into 2026, indicating that the agent transition is still being operationalized across devices.

Android Halo appears to add a system-level interface layer to that transition: rather than only exposing AI through discrete app features, it gives the agent a persistent but restrained way to communicate activity on the phone.
