Google announces Gemini Spark, a “24/7 personal AI agent” that is powered by Gemini 3.5 and supports integrations with Google Workspace apps, including Gmail

The AI agent is rolling out to testers this week.  —  Google has announced a “24/7 personal AI agent” …

Engadget Mariella Moon

Context & Ripple Effects

Google has been positioning Gemini as an agent-capable model since Gemini 2.0, while separately building an enterprise platform for managing fleets of agents on Vertex AI. Spark brings that agent framing to an individual-facing product tied to Workspace.

The launch also follows Google’s report that the Gemini app has surpassed 900 million monthly active users, giving Google a large existing surface through which to test a more persistent, action-oriented assistant.

First-order effects

  • Testers can use Gemini Spark as a persistent personal agent with connections to Google Workspace applications, including Gmail, rather than solely as a conversational Gemini interface.
  • Google gains an early test bed for Gemini 3.5-powered agent behavior across personal productivity workflows and Workspace integrations.

Second-order effects

  • Workspace becomes a more central distribution and data-access layer for Gemini: the practical value of Spark will depend on how reliably it can operate across users’ mail, documents and presentations.
  • Rival productivity-suite providers and AI assistant vendors face added pressure to offer similarly integrated agents, not just standalone chat tools.

Third-order effects

  • If personal agents prove dependable in connected work apps, competition is likely to shift from model quality alone toward control of workflow integrations, permissions and persistent user context.
  • The rollout underscores a converging consumer-and-enterprise agent strategy, though broader adoption will hinge on user trust in agents with ongoing access to sensitive Workspace data.

The trend: Spark is one data point in the shift from general-purpose AI chatbots toward persistent agents embedded in the software systems where work is performed.

Gemini Spark is your new 24/7 personal AI agent. Give it a task and it works autonomously in the background, even if your phone and laptop are turned off. You choose to turn it on and it's designed to check with you before taking major actions. #GoogleIO
