Sam Altman's home was just targeted in a second attack. Early Sunday morning, a car stopped and appears to have fired a gun at the Russian Hill home of OpenAI's CEO, according to a newly-obtained police report. [image]

@powerbottomdad1 AI marketing to the general public has been, “you'll all lose your jobs and be replaced while my privately held stock that feeds off your public domain info prints me infinite money” Their messaging is horrible.

@powerbottomdad1 Agree AND top AI companies & leaders desperately need to transform the narrative on AI & data center rollout Outsiders see a vanishingly small group of ppl poised to make huge coin from models trained on the *public* corpus of all human knowledge while they get h…

When you keep saying over and over again that the people developing AI are evil, and that AI will kill everyone on earth, eventually, some people will listen. Anyone intelligent would understand that, even if they claim it's not their intent. https://sfstandard.com/...

the anti-ai people are the rare combo of high-IQ, extremist, and *inside the US already* usually we don't get that combo. the technology ecosystem in the US breaks if notability means you can't interact with normal people

In today's post, I predict that this rash of terror attacks will cause AI companies to take more of their physical security into their own hands. https://www.noahpinion.blog/ ...
  • @krismicinski Kristopher Micinski on x
@perrymetzger This modern-day eco terrorism stuff is really stupid. I respect some criticisms of AI (although some are based on talking points, others like skyrocketing power prices I feel even myself), going out to violently attack someone is totally not the answer

Why did Sam choose this wording on his blog post after the first attack? It seems odd to me. [image]

This week alone: • 2x attacks on Sam Altman's house • Attack on an Indianapolis city councilmember's home + note on the doormat saying “no data centers” • Many cities & states advancing regs to stop data center development indefinitely AI narrative control = already toast [image]

this is really bad i hope this gets everyone to stop and reflect on how poorly this is all going ai is incredible tech that every single person has had at least one incredible experience with for it to be so hated despite that is a huge failure [image]
  • @tszzl Roon on x
maybe the media shouldn't consistently include full identifying addresses for some reason when reporting on attacks
  • @powerbottomdad1 @powerbottomdad1 on x
@bwilldur agree! but killing sam altman is still terribly wrong and doesnt help their cause
  • @powerbottomdad1 @powerbottomdad1 on x
this fuckin has to stop. talk to your friends who hate ai. tell them to stop and seek help
  • @yrwelcomematt @yrwelcomematt on x
@powerbottomdad1 The most persuasive method against this type of violence is, ironically, reassurance that their AI fears are overblown because they're based on the hype and overpromises of the very AI execs they want to hurt.

Somewhat interesting from a sociological perspective to see Rationalism evolve from a philosophical framework into a millenarian cult, and then onwards into a driver of stochastic terrorism.  —  sfstandard.com/2026/04/12/s...

You should really not have conflicting thoughts here. It's horrible and obviously so. You respond by doing better and self-policing your community to be more responsible with their influence. We don't need your takes. We need your maturity. Otherwise, the violent rhetoric

I get that Yudkowsky formally condemns the attack on Sam Altman's home and that his book formally condemns acts of vigilantism. But I also think that if you were to take seriously the central thesis of his book - that AI execs are essentially working to bring about the

  • @austinc3301 Agus on x
The genuine concern underneath is real: when your community sincerely believes the stakes are civilizational, some fraction of people who encounter those ideas will conclude that extreme action is justified. That's true no matter how many disclaimers you include.
  • @austinc3301 Agus on x
There's been a lot of bad-faith opportunism from people using this to argue that acknowledging existential risks from AI is itself incitement to violence. I think that framing is wrong and politically motivated. But rejecting it does not imply we should stop thinking about this.
  • @esyudkowsky Eliezer Yudkowsky on x
@sama @ShakeelHashim I want to say something about how I'm sorry for this tough day you've had and how it shouldn't have happened to you, but if I say anything more than that, Twitter will find some way to misinterpret it. :/ Please take my wishes there as sensibly expressed.
  • @noahpinion Noah Smith on x
Hmm. But leading AI figures give pretty high p(doom) numbers. Dario says he thinks AI has a 25% chance of causing human extinction or something similar. [image]
  • @sriramk Sriram Krishnan on x
I think the doomers need to take a serious look at what they have helped incite and not just rely on “we condemn this and have said this is not the rational response”. This is the logical outcome of “If we build it everyone dies”.
  • @webdevmason Mason on x
This is true *and* we obviously need to be able to talk about technological risks, inclusive of AI but also infectious biotech, nuclear, etc. I do see *some* x risk people (I'm not accusing Yudkowsky, here) explicitly targeting AI execs and employees, and that way lies real evil
  • @deanwball Dean W. Ball on x
This is well said and mirrors my own analysis of the situation exactly. No one smart should be surprised there is violence happening, and in the eyes of many safetyists, some amount of rogue violence is an acceptable tradeoff of their heated rhetoric, since they believe the
  • @apralky Yung Macro on x
They have taken a serious look! And they have judged that trade-off trivially acceptable. The questions of how much violence one *wants* vs. how much violence one *is willing to tolerate* are altogether separate ones, though they have been muddled together in the discourse [image…
  • @ylecun Yann LeCun on x
@Noahpinion Most “leading AI figures” think this p(doom) estimates are complete bullshit and the existential risk is essentially zero. But most of them are silent. The doomers attract a disproportionate amount of attention, of course.
  • @chris_j_paxton Chris Paxton on x
Outside of tech Twitter the rhetorical environment around AI is really bad, really poisonous, and its not at all surprising to me these things are happening There's a lot of companies which are not helping — not the major ai companies — but everyone is playing up the ai risk

I know I'm not smart enough to pass a journalism ethics class, but if you're sharing news about Sam Altman's house being attacked multiple times in a week maybe don't show pictures of it and share the address?
