We're saying goodbye to Sora. To everyone who created with Sora, shared it, and built community around it: thank you. What you made with Sora mattered, and we know this news is disappointing. We'll share more soon, including timelines for the app and API and details on

When we get up to bat at OpenAI we take huge swings. Some of them don't work out. But what extraordinary work from the Sora team as pioneers in this space. Massive kudos to the team for trying this out and making it so good.

Didn't expect OpenAI to bow out of AI video creation so early. But AI video probably consumes a lot of computing resources that could be better allocated to other products. Regardless, it's now ceding the market to Adobe, Google, RunwayML, Kling AI, et al. https://www.wsj.com/...

damn not even having it in ChatGPT ? Hard to compete with the likes of seedance 2 while burning compute. Better give us some amazing new models to make up for it. [image]

Good. Sora accelerated one of the worst aspects of the new AI economy. Absolutely horrible thing for OpenAI to create

Evidence that Fidji is serious about focus. Dedicated Sora app is going away. Sora almost certainly coming to ChatGPT. Hopefully this includes ChatGPT Enterprise, since we already have Veo in Gemini for Workspace.

So basically OpenAI is now desperately trying to copy the one category of LLM tool that seems to have a decent sized potential market, but for which their main competitor has now gotten to a point where they're a default choice that customers have to be actively lured away from? …

  • @dbreunig Drew Breunig on x
I am not surprised Sora's engagement declined. These tools generally follow a similar curve. My litmus test remains true: if something is impressive solely because an AI achieved it, it will spike before a rapid decline. https://www.dbreunig.com/... [image]

Would be so cool if OpenAI open-sourced Sora as they're shutting down the app! Would be an amazing contribution to the field and make all the efforts of the teams working on it even more meaningful!

I feel like we should all be a little concerned/outraged that there was allegedly a $1 billion transaction between two parties that just *didn't happen* despite multiple stories (and even a deep dive “about how the deal came together) saying otherwise? Disney saw a stock bump!

All the AI labs are exploring the opportunity space for LLMs. Anthropic has always been very focused and OpenAI more prone to testing, and abandoning, concepts (GPT Store, Sora, etc.). Google sort of does everything at once. It is unclear which strategy will be best in the end.
  • @daniel_rubino Daniel Rubino on x
Sora shutting down is certainly an unexpected move.  It showed up, terrified Hollywood (and married Disney), burned a mountain of GPUs, and then Irish-exited like it had somewhere better to be.  Won't miss it, but you can't say it didn't leave a dent.  Just a big distraction good…
