The US FCC is banning imports of new foreign-made consumer routers over security concerns; China is estimated to control 60%+ of the US market for home routers

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission said on Monday it was banning the import of all new foreign-made consumer routers …

Today, the FCC took additional action to safeguard Americans and the communications networks we rely on. The FCC added consumer routers produced in foreign countries to the agency's Covered List. This action follows a national security determination provided by Executive Branch […

The Trump Administration is banning wireless router imports into the US for devices made internationally. The order is likely focused on TP-Link, but everyone — Netgear, Linksys, Amazon, Google, you name it, builds their routers overseas. https://www.bloomberg.com/...

They just dropped a nuke on literally the entire consumer router market. But enterprise & government is excluded? Can anyone name a good wireless router that's completely built in North America? Genuinely curious.
  • @justinpruett Justin Pruett on x
How in the world are they going to ban all routers made in foreign countries when pretty much every router, even those from an American company, is made/assembled in China or Vietnam? Take a look at the label on the bottom of your router, it probably doesn't say Made in USA...

The FCC today updated its list of products that can't be sold in the U.S. to include *all* consumer routers made in foreign countries. It's a big but potentially disruptive move to limit supply-chain security risks to U.S. networks. https://docs.fcc.gov/... [image]

As you probably could have guessed, virtually all routers are *made* outside of the US. The reason they worded it this way is that Chinese router OEMs have set up contractors in electronics manufacturing hubs to add a layer of separation. Allied designers will be given waivers.

One little known fact about the Google WiFi routers was that we put a TPM module in every one to cryptographically verify every line of code it depends on. Same with Chromebooks.
  • @weldpond @weldpond on x
Wait, are there any wireless routers built in the U.S? What about all the vulnerable and EOL routers already here and running? That's the bigger risk.

The FCC basically just outlawed all consumer routers.
  • @chrisrmcguire Chris McGuire on x
The FCC just prohibited the sale of any new model of foreign-made consumer routers in the United States, without a license. Hopefully the intent is to implement this in a similar way to the FCC's recent foreign drone restrictions: prohibit devices from Chinese companies, while

We cannot allow China to have a single foothold in our homeland. To ensure the CCP can't spy on America, I called for a full investigation of Chinese company TP-Link whose technology is being sold in military exchanges. Thank you @BrendanCarrFCC for listening to my call to

Strong move by the @FCC & @BrendanCarrFCC to put national security first. By adding foreign-produced routers to the Covered List—following clear findings from the Executive Branch—the FCC is taking targeted, risk-based action to protect U.S. networks, critical infrastructure,

The Chinese Hack that led to the banning of foreign routers is way worse than I ever imagined. The Chinese were not just in our routers. They had access to our iot. That's “cameras. Video recordings, storage devices.” Even “court approved access to communication systems.” Meaning…

The order makes clear that: 1.) Previously-imported routers are not affected by the move, 2.) Manufacturers can receive a “conditional approval” to continue selling their devices in the U.S. — some probably will.

The process of adding spyware to US-made routers (as the NSA has admitted doing since at least 2010 - see e.g. www.theguardian.com/books/2014/ m...) will of course be made much easier by this new ban.

Stop trying to make fetch happen...  Seriously.  The plan to bring back US manufacturing is just ‘ban everything we use until they make it here,’ and that's not a plan.  It's not even the concepts of a plan.  It's just idiocy driven by idiots.
