OpenAI plans to merge ChatGPT, Codex, and its browser into a desktop “superapp” to simplify the user experience and focus on engineering and business customers

The AI company will combine ChatGPT, Codex app and browser in an effort to focus and streamline its resources

Discussion

Companies go through phases of exploration and phases of refocus; both are critical. But when new bets start to work, like we're seeing now with Codex, it's very important to double down on them and avoid distractions. Really glad we're seizing this moment.
  • @karrisaarinen Karri Saarinen on x
IMO they should bundle ChatGPT and browser but keep Codex out of it. The use and usage patterns are different and you might hurt Codex by bundling it
  • @jasonhiner Jason Hiner on x
Here for this, if it happens. The 3 apps are too much. And combining these 3 would provide an advantage versus both Anthropic and Perplexity.

For context/clarity: OAI chief of applications Fidji Simo will oversee the change, and also tapped Greg Brockman to help with the revamp. Brockman plans to return to leading the computing team after finishing his work with creating the “superapp”

Not shocking, makes a ton of sense
  • @omooretweets Olivia Moore on x
As an early superfan of AI browsers, ChatGPT moving towards a desktop app instead actually makes sense to me. Perplexity Comet has been arguably the most successful product here - and while they have a real base of power users, it's been hard to maintain growth 👇 We've seen [imag…

We've entered into an agreement to join OpenAI as part of the Codex team. I'm incredibly proud of the work we've done so far, incredibly grateful to everyone that's supported us, and incredibly excited to keep building tools that make programming feel different.

UNBELIEVABLY excited about the Astral team joining OpenAI! We've long looked up to the work that @charliermarsh and his incredible team has done with ruff, uv, ty - can't believe we'll get to work together!

if you own an entire software ecosystem distribution channel, it means that you own the means for shipping novel codelang forks. recent moves from oai & ant here for uv & bun are incredible vertical unlocks to language+ai codesign.

No promise to not change uv/etc to suit OpenAI's sloppy requests. It may be over, hope it isn't. Confirms my suspicion about the Deno acquisition too, they want both runtimes/ecosystems.

Anthropic would have built this in a day and a dev would have tweeted the news. At OpenAI, an exec is telling you about a plan. That gap tells you everything. In the last 7 days, Anthropic shipped Dispatch, channels, voice mode, /loop, 1M context GA, MCP elicitation, persistent

I might be wrong but codex as a separate app is what makes it smooth and functional unlike Claude that bundled everything in one app and breaking all functionality.

OpenAI is a Meta cargo cult (makes sense given 700 ex-Meta employees). One breakthrough product innovation that got them distribution and all future success comes from capitalizing on that distribution and copying product innovations from competitors. Stick to what works!

they have much more room to play around here though, since FB had 20+ years of cloning startup features and the seeming inability to prune things that didnt work my guess is their sora app plummeted in use and their whole idea about “IG-like ads” needs legs for the IPO

Calling the core Chat experience a “distraction” is exactly why OpenAI is losing its community. You can't build your entire empire on everyday users and then toss them aside for enterprise coding tools without consequences. #keep4o #opensource4o [image]
