Definitely temporary, if Meta licenses at all. Mark would never cede platform control again after what he experienced with the App Store. The stakes are too high and the race is still early.

Zuckerberg should spend some time with @elonmusk and learn innovation basics. Since writing the original Facebook code, he has produced little that could be called a breakthrough. Major projects have failed, and only acquisitions like Instagram and WhatsApp have succeeded.

Mark is really Zucking up $META again. The chronic underperformance of Meta's models over the last year, despite their mind-boggling AI CapEx and hiring spree suggests that scale is not the solution. It doesn't buy a durable competitive advantage. Not for Meta and not for xAI.

Scoop from me: Meta delays Avocado 🥑 after performance concerns. The new model is better than Llama 4 but worse than other frontiers — somewhere in between Gemini 2.5 and 3. There is excitement about the model after Avo, named after an even larger fruit: Watermelon 🍉 [image]

Meta is on track to spend up to $135 billion on AI infrastructure this year. And now they're reportedly considering licensing their biggest ad competitor's model as a stopgap. Some context on how we got here. Between 2022 and 2025, Meta poured roughly $140 billion into AI. In

don't worry guys, now that moltbook has been acquired - the dataset can only get richer and avocado can be ripe again

Does Zuckerberg just have terrible taste? Anyone who's used Gemini, ChatGPT, and Claude knows Gemini is way behind ChatGPT which is way behind Claude.

on the plus side Meta continuing to be bad at AI has substantially lowered my p(doom)

Turns out you can't just buy yourself into being a frontier AI company - the money is necessary but not sufficient 👀

surprised they haven't just finetuned a chinese model. clearly cannot compete rn

Both xAI and Meta seem to be falling behind, based on the Grok 4.2 benchmarks and this reporting. Frontier AI models are really a three way race at this point.
  • @kevinroose Kevin Roose on x
Imagine spending all that money to hire researchers, and you still have to license Gemini.

META has delayed the release of Avocado until at least May after it underperformed on internal evals, according to reporting by the NYT. They are considering licensing Gemini from Google as a temporary solution. [image]

Like I have been saying, Zuck is garbage at product development
  • @ianbach Ian Bach on x
Hot take but I kind of feel that Apple (and now Meta) being pushed to competitive desperation and choosing to partner with Google should kind of be considered an anti-trust violation.
  • @yunta_tsai Yun-Ta Tsai on x
In less than 4 months, xAI (founded July 12, 2023) went from zero to one with the first Grok release (November 4, 2023)—extremely lightning-fast. I think most companies spend at least a month just decorating a new office for the founding team, while Elon's companies get to work
  • @cxcarroll @cxcarroll on x
I've long suspected that Meta was behind on Ai. Their release tempo is way behind the SOTA labs and their purchases and hires seem... desperate... and lack coherence.
  • @cryptopunk7213 @cryptopunk7213 on x
holy shit Meta might ditch ai efforts and go with google gemini instead Meta to delay their new AI model launch and use gemini to power Meta AI - HUGE fucking win for google: - Meta's avocado model underperformed frontier models from openai, google and anthropic (shitty [image]
  • @scaling01 @scaling01 on x
now that Meta's LLM efforts are truly dead, I want to thank them one last time for releasing Llama-1 to 3 2023-2024 was truly a fun time in the open-source space thanks to them (and Mistral)
  • @blhodder Blaine Hodder on x
The rational response to this is to buy $Meta if Zuck is willing to recognize competing on frontier models is unwise & dial back capex. $meta gets nearly all the upside taking the $aapl approach riding AI margin curve higher. Has potential to be Metaverse capex reversal 2.0
  • @scaling01 @scaling01 on x
Meta's AI efforts are wasted. They are even further behind than Google and xAI. Probably even behind Kimi-K2.5 only Anthropic and OpenAI will play the endgame

A few weeks ago, there were two models, “Mint” and “Chocolate” that claimed to be new Meta AI models on DesignArena I wonder if they were related to the Avocado model. The performance of the models wasn't that great [image]

people are overreacting to this. a gemini 2.5 level model isn't bad!
  • @kimmonismus @kimmonismus on x
META's internal “Avocado” model is disappointing, barely outperforming Gemini 2.5 in evaluations. The shocker: despite all the investments in LLMs, they're considering licensing and using competitor models like Gemini. Next level cash burn. [image]

@elitanjourno Funny that the @nytimes wrote almost 1,000 words to tell you what Mark already said on Meta's earnings call two months ago. Here he is: [image]
