Apple unveils the M5 Pro and M5 Max, offering a new Apple-designed Fusion Architecture, a next-generation up-to-40-core GPU with Neural Accelerators, and more

Apple

Context & Ripple Effects

Apple had already introduced the base M5 with Neural Accelerators in each GPU core, making the pro-tier announcement a continuation of its effort to distribute AI-focused compute across the Mac chip lineup. The base M5’s per-core Neural Accelerators established the direction; M5 Pro and M5 Max scale it to higher-end systems.

The launch coincides with a MacBook Pro refresh built around these chips, where Apple emphasizes faster local LLM prompt processing and SSD performance. That accompanying MacBook Pro update turns the silicon announcement into a near-term product differentiation point rather than a standalone roadmap disclosure.

First-order effects

  • Apple gives MacBook Pro buyers a new performance tier built around Fusion Architecture, up to 40 GPU cores, and dedicated AI acceleration, with claimed gains in CPU and AI workloads.
  • Developers and professional Mac users gain a more capable local-compute target, while Apple can position the M5 Pro and Max systems around both conventional performance and AI tasks.

Second-order effects

  • The emphasis on GPU-level Neural Accelerators raises the bar for premium PC chips: rival laptop platforms must compete on how efficiently they run mixed CPU, GPU, and AI workloads, not simply peak CPU performance.
  • Software makers serving Mac creative and AI workflows have a clearer incentive to optimize for Apple’s heterogeneous hardware, especially where local inference can benefit from the refreshed MacBook Pro hardware.

Third-order effects

  • If Apple carries this design through successive Mac generations, premium-client computing will increasingly be defined by heterogeneous AI capability—the coordination of CPU, GPU, and specialized accelerators—rather than a single benchmark metric.
  • The strategic divide in AI PCs may widen between vendors that control silicon, operating system, and hardware integration and those relying on more standardized component roadmaps; the durability of that advantage depends on developer adoption.

The trend: This is part of the shift toward heterogeneous, on-device AI compute becoming a core differentiator in premium personal computers.

M5 Pro/Max are just fine for N3P on paper, don't you think? M6 generation should also be nice. Can't go wrong now or later, unless it's suddenly time to bet against Apple Silicon lol

To be as clear as possible about M5 cores: There are now 3 types of cores: super core, performance core, efficiency core M5 has 4 super cores, 6 efficiency cores M5 Pro/Max have 6 super cores, 12 performance cores Up until today, the super core was referred to as performance

@MKBHD Yeh... once I read on I realized they renamed performance cores on M5 to super cores lol.
  • @mkbhd Marques Brownlee on x
@VadimYuryev They literally just renamed the same types of cores

Apple just dropped the new MacBook Pro with M5 Pro & M5 Max 🔥 Built for serious AI + pro workflows Here's what's new: • Up to 18-core CPU (world's fastest CPU core) • Next-gen GPU with Neural Accelerator in every core • Up to 4x faster AI vs previous gen • Up to 8x faster [image]

Day 2 of Apple announcement's! We have an updated MacBook Air with M5. MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and M5 Max. Plus, an all new Studio Display with a 120Hz Mini LED Panel! [image]

It looks like with M5 Pro/Max they changed the cores a bit, the super core is the same actual performance core for M5, which was also changed to be called the super core The performance cores in M5 Pro/Max are new performance cores designed specifically for multi-threaded work

Apple just did new MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and M5 Max What's interesting about this one is it's a chiplet! The CPU in both M5 Pro and M5 Max is the same 18 core CPU with 6 super cores and 12 performance cores but you the GPU is either 20-core in the Pro and 40 in the Max [image]

HOLY SMOKES! Apple ditched efficiency cores! Now using 6 Super cores and 12 Perfomance cores. WHAT!!! Over 30% improvement in multi-core CPU Perfomance was NOT expected.. [image]

Took Apple long enough lol! Now we can wait for M5 Ultra in June! [image]

Interesting details on M5 Pro/Max chips: CPU and GPU are now separate dies combined via an interposer.  Also Apple now has 3 types of cores: super cores (what used to be perf cores), perf cores (new design), and efficiency cores (same as before).  —  www.apple.com/newsroom/202...
