Meta agrees to acquire up to 6GW of AMD Instinct GPUs in a deal valued at $100B+ that could see Meta own up to 10% of AMD; Meta plans to deploy 1GW in 2026

The deal could result in Meta owning as much as 10% of AMD's stock as the chip maker seeks to challenge Nvidia

Is 6 gigawatts a lot of computing power? Active Fortnite players together own around 30 gigawatts of computing power, as consoles and high end PCs range from 350W to 1KW. That's probably the largest gaming power base in existence, since any bigger games are mobile-centric.

A lot to like about the $AMD and $Meta deal. A few things most interesting besides the tens of billions, likely over 4-5 years (that's how long it will take to fill 6GW). Co-optomized Instinct for Meta: By being willing to make specific optomizations to the GPU for Meta

I don't think this matters other than “potentially a ~10% stake in AMD”: * AMD is ~3rd in chips behind Nvidia GPUs & Google TPUs * META is not a even top 5 AI lab anymore BUTTTTT if Meta wants to win AR/VR, this could be a way to start in-housing silicon design a-la apple

Meta commits $100B and 6GW to AMD. Congrats to cousin Lisa Su 12GW now committed between Meta and OpenAI. But the warrant structure tells you the real story: AMD has to give away equity to win deals NVIDIA closes on product alone. The CUDA moat is real. $NVDA $AMD

LOL, Lisa Su running the zaniest stock-pump scheme of all time, by giving 10% of the company for free to $META. Why would anyone now else be so dumb to buy $AMD product without getting free warrants? And how about $CMG giving us $10 in warrants every time we order a burrito?

  • @mgsiegler M.G. Siegler on x
But really, it seems like the same exact deal with AMD? Will Microsoft, Amazon, Anthropic, xAI, etc go and get the same one? As of right now, if AMD's stock price hits $600/share (it's just under $200 now), OpenAI and Meta will magically and suddenly own 20% of the company...
