OpenAI and AMD announce a deal in which OpenAI could take up to a 10% stake in AMD and deploy up to 6GW of Instinct GPUs over multiple years; AMD jumps 25%+

- OpenAI and AMD have reached a deal that could see Sam Altman's company take a 10% stake in the chipmaker

CNBC MacKenzie Sigalos

Context & Ripple Effects

The agreement ties a major AI buyer more closely to AMD through both multiyear capacity commitments and a potential ownership position. Follow-on coverage specifies that the first gigawatt of Instinct MI450 capacity is due in H2 2026, making the arrangement a deployment roadmap rather than solely a supply announcement: the first gigawatt is scheduled for H2 2026.

It also puts AMD's software work at the center of hardware competition: an AMD executive later said software shaped with OpenAI input helped win the deal. The market’s immediate repricing, covered as a roughly $78B increase in AMD’s market value, shows how strongly investors read a large AI-customer commitment as validation.

First-order effects

  • OpenAI gains a pathway to up to 6GW of AMD Instinct capacity and could become a significant AMD shareholder, aligning its supply plans more directly with the vendor’s execution.
  • AMD receives a marquee multiyear customer commitment and an immediate equity-market boost, while taking on delivery expectations beginning with the planned MI450 rollout.

Second-order effects

  • AMD will have to convert the customer relationship into reliable hardware and software deployment; the reported OpenAI-informed software work becomes a more material competitive asset, not a peripheral feature.
  • Competing AI-chip suppliers face a clearer challenge for large customer contracts: capacity commitments may increasingly be paired with strategic commercial or equity terms rather than negotiated as conventional purchases alone.

Third-order effects

  • If replicated, AI infrastructure procurement could become more financially intertwined: major model developers would secure capacity while taking economic stakes in suppliers, concentrating demand and supplier-roadmap influence among a small set of buyers.
  • The subsequent report of Meta pursuing a similarly sized AMD capacity arrangement and potential stake suggests this may be an emerging template, though its durability depends on vendors meeting the promised deployment schedules: Meta’s later up-to-6GW AMD arrangement.

The trend: AI compute buyers are moving from transactional chip purchasing toward long-duration capacity partnerships that combine hardware roadmaps, software collaboration, and financial alignment.

What I like most about the $AMD- @OpenAI deal are the shared incentives. The more @OpenAI buys, the higher the AMD stock price and the higher value of the warrants. OpenAI gets value from the share appreciation as do investors. AMD, AMD shareholders, OpenAI and OpenAI investors

Since nobody is saying it I will: We're witnessing the largest and most concentrated instant market cap expansions in history with no proven future revenue/cost/earnings models to back up the investments or the valuations. This market is running on an incredible amount of blind

My Takeaway on $AMD @OpenAI deal is simple - Despite all the hardware and ecosystem moves + progress made by $AMD, there was always this fear/uncertainty on how much $AMD will actually SELL in Chip markets - Since #OpenAi started and kinda leading this #Ai trend for now, there

OpenAI + $AMD deal gives Sam Altman and team a massive incentive to succeed with AMD. A very interesting turn of events. 10% ownership requires the stock to reach $600. That's a huge uplift and road ahead.
  • @emostaque Emad on x
Some rough math 6 GW of AI chips is about 3m chips Chips are about $30k each => $90bn in chip purchases OpenAI gets $27.5b worth of warrants in AMD stock for those purchases subject to build out, milestones etc Think Sam will do even more interesting deals to the trillion!

One of my takeaways at The Curve is that 2026 is going to be when the crazy investments in AI infrastructure recently start to kick in as available compute.

Also it's wild to see contracts laid out in GW, this is all about the atoms not bits anymore

$NVDA owns parts of OpenAI and now OpenAI uses AMD. OpenAI took money from NVDA to buy $AMD chips and a stake. Nothing to see here.
  • @rihardjarc Rihard Jarc on x
Ok, all great, but where is the MONEY going to come from? OAI, now with Stargate, $NVDA, and now $AMD, has said to spend and build 26GW of data centers in the next few years. 1GW = $60B. So the total “committed” spend is now at $1.56T. In the last 5 years, $AAPL, $AMZN, $META,

We're 3 years into this AI boom when ChatGPT launched, so we're like around the 1997 timeframe of this bubble. With big investements and announcements resulting in massive stock move, like oracle a few weeks ago, now AMD.
  • @_fabknowledge_ @_fabknowledge_ on x
The simplistic framing is Nvidia gets OAI equity so that OAI can buy more chips AMD needs to give away their equity to OAI so that they can buy their GPUs Regardless, congrats AMD today's your day

The $$ market for GPUS is rapidly growing to hundreds of billions by end of decade. @LisaSu projected $500B for GPUs alone in 2028. This is TAM expansion. $NVDA will sell every GPU they make for years and $AMD is well positioned to fill the gap as we remain compute constrained

Exciting day today! Thrilled to partner with @OpenAI to deploy 6GWs of AMD Instinct GPUs. The world needs more AI compute. Together, we're bringing the best of both companies to accelerate the global AI infrastructure buildout. Thanks @sama @gdb for the trust and partnership.

Like I've been saying. AI software is drastically out running compute. I may move my timeline from 4 yrs to 5 yrs (min) that AI software is already out ahead of compute. Wont' catch up any time soon!
  • @gdb Greg Brockman on x
We're working to build as much compute as we can, as quickly as we can, over the next few years. We believe that the world continues to underestimate AI demand: we're already compute bottlenecked on launching new features, and exponential progress of model capability continues.

$AMD surges 27% after OpenAI deal. OpenAI diversifies beyond $NVDA and secures compute runway. • 6 GW of Instinct GPUs. • First 1 GW in 2H 2026 on MI450. • OpenAI can earn ~10% of AMD shares. • Tens of billions in revenue potential for AMD. [image]

$AMD at ATH and then some. @AMD Helios in particular, well positioned to fill the need of GPUs in a market where we will be GPU/compute constrained for the forseeable future. [image]

So basically OpenAI wants AMD to stick around so it doesn't become dependent on NVIDIA? When they did their NVIDIA deal, NVIDIA bought OpenAI shares, now this time OpenAI is getting AMD warrants

Huge, revenue-warrants contractual deal between $AMD and @OpenAI — what it is, what it isn't, and why it matters. Overall: This is a massive, multi-year GPU supply + incentive alignment. OpenAI commits to scale on AMD Instinct (starting with MI450) up to 6 gigawatts over [image]
