If only Meta could build a competent model, every software and pro services company would sign up tomorrow if Meta promised not to put out press releases destroying their business Would choke off a critical part of the revenue (and distribution path) for the labs overnight

What a dumb sell-off. $IBM is investing in its own code conversion to modernize its customers already. Has been for years. IBM makes more money if COBOL goes away. https://www.cnbc.com/...

Claude Code can easily rewrite COBOL into new, modern langauges. This has been true for months. I guess it's the announcement, not the capability, that moves markets...

Everyone keeps saying IGV is “6 standard deviations oversold.” Maybe. But IGV has never faced this before. A Claude blog post → cybersecurity down double digits. A COBOL comment → IBM has one of its worst two-hour drops this century. That's not volatility. That's duration

I suspect this will later turn into an IBM win; who is going to entrust vibecoder weekend hackers with using AI to rewrite COBOL transaction systems? No, it will be IBM who gets trusted to do it, and it will be cheaper so they'll be able to do more of it in less time.

There's an increasingly dystopian tone to commentary on AI. Fed Gov Waller today: “The thing with AI is it's coming at us so fast....that it's easy to start seeing jobs that may go away before you see the new jobs that are going to be created.”

Nothing captures how Anthropic lapped OpenAI in perceived AI capabilities like IBM stock dropping -13% over a blog about Claude Code understanding COBOL.  —  Can any OpenAI announcement tank a stock besides a story about OpenAI not having the money to pay them?

Yesterday, Claude deleted the entire Gmail history of a woman who works as an AI safety researcher at Meta's superintelligence team. Today, we're learning it's moving on to tackle COBOL running 43% of the banking system, 93% of ATMs, the IRS, and $3T of daily settlements. Nice.

Anthropic just vaporized $31 billion of IBM's market cap with a blog post about COBOL. The math looks brutal on the surface. IBM closed at $223, down 13%, its worst single-day loss since October 2000. The stock is down 27% in February alone, the worst month since 1968. Accenture

Anthropic published a blog post and playbook on how Claude Code handles COBOL. This isn't about fixing old code or keeping it on a mainframe. The process has two stages: first, AI automates the analysis - mapping dependencies, documenting workflows, identifying risks. Work that […

This is actually insane. Had a lecturer back in the day who was one of the few people in South Africa who was sensei-level in COBOL. The lecturing was his side-hustle - an idea whispered to him by his wife to “give back”. Mans made so much money from maintaining a large retail

ibm losing $40b because claude can read cobol is a massive overreaction. current models have always understood cobol; the real bottleneck isn't the “translation”—it's the secure, on-prem execution. no major bank is sending their core financial logic to a public api. the real
