The commitments Apple and Google made to the UK Competition and Markets Authority fail to open the mobile app ecosystem to real competition. Gatekeepers continue to block competing app stores and payment systems with outright prohibitions as well as scare screens and junk fees.

Good ex-ante news out of the UK today, with the CMA looking to accept commitments from Apple and Google under the DMCCA and their designation as SMS firms for Mobile Ecosystems. This means changes will happen sooner, and without extensive litigation. https://x.com/...

Today the @CMAgovUK announced it is seeking views on voluntary commitments from Apple and Google following their Strategic Market Status designation. CAF is concerned this relies on voluntary compliance and defers action on steering, the issue most affecting prices and choice.
