Yesterday the EU Commission's Consumer Protection Cooperation Network announced new enforcement actions against Meta for its “Pay or OK” binary service option. This is the third-case against Meta for the same conduct. What the EU needs is to simplify and streamline enforcement.

What's underreported about today's settlement is that it does not give access to Apple's “Secure Element” technology, it's payment card emulation, using (presumably) standard NFC technology. This probably played into the Commission's hand, i.e. NFC isn't proprietary to Apple [image]
