Sources: Apple plans to allow third-party voice-controlled AI chatbots in CarPlay within the coming months; it won't let users replace CarPlay's Siri button

Apple Inc. is preparing to allow voice-controlled artificial intelligence apps from other companies in CarPlay

Bloomberg Mark Gurman

Context & Ripple Effects

Apple’s CarPlay move extends its earlier effort to make Siri more capable of acting across apps, outlined in Apple’s planned Siri overhaul. The key boundary is that Apple is opening an app-access channel without surrendering the system voice control to another assistant.

Related coverage later described third-party conversational-app support arriving in CarPlay, while subsequent reporting pointed to a broader plan for Siri to invoke AI services through App Store apps. Together, the coverage frames CarPlay as an early, controlled opening for external AI services.

First-order effects

  • Third-party voice-controlled AI chatbot apps gain a route into CarPlay, giving drivers access to those services through Apple’s in-car interface.
  • Apple retains control of the primary Siri button, so Siri remains the fixed entry point and third-party assistants cannot become CarPlay’s default system assistant.

Second-order effects

  • AI app providers must optimize for CarPlay’s approved voice-app path rather than compete for the system control, making Apple’s integration rules the practical gatekeeper for in-car distribution.
  • The split between app access and assistant ownership gives Apple room to broaden AI choice while preserving Siri’s role as the interface that mediates user requests.

Third-order effects

  • If replicated across Apple platforms, this model could establish a layered assistant market: outside AI services compete on capability, while the platform owner keeps the invocation point, permissions, and default interaction.
  • That structure may improve distribution parity among AI apps relative to a single exclusive partner, but only within the constraints Apple sets for system-level access.

The trend: This is part of the shift toward platform-controlled AI interoperability, where devices expose third-party models and apps without ceding control of the assistant operating layer.

Guess they realized having to ask Siri to ask ChatGPT stuff in order to get a reasonable answer wasn't a good experience https://www.bloomberg.com/...

Slightly more convenient than hitting the action button to speak to Grok while commuting, as I do now. (ChatGPT and Gemini interrupt themselves over car speakers, so Grok is currently the only option.)

@MacRumors Your commute is about to become the most productive hour of your day and nobody saw that coming.

3rd party wake words in iOS 27 please?! Would be nice to have quick access (Hey ChatGPT) without the clunky Action Button + Shortcut implementation.
