There are only two kinds of companies left: 1. The ones that invest $100B+ per year in datacenter Capex. 2. Permanent underclass.

Their stock fell 10% because they outperformed on selling cloud services, but vowed to piss all of it away plus oh-so-much-more to tilt at the AI windmill. Also they didn't sell enough underpants.

$AMZN CEO @ajassy guides to ~$200B capex in FY26, up 52% YoY from $131.8B in FY25. “With such strong demand for our existing offerings and seminal opportunities ...we expect to invest about $200B in capex across Amazon in 2026 & anticipate strong long-term ROIC” [image]

Amazon $AMZN - Capex of $200B in '26 (+54%YoY vs. +40%YoY whisper) Andy Jassy anticipates strong long-term ROIC but pundits are convinced AI is a bubble. More capex by $AMZN and $GOOGL is positive for the AI trade, the market has gone wild.

  • @retail_guru Rahul Sharma on x
As with $GOOGL, discomfort at $AMZN is that $200 billion in capex, more than 4X 2022 levels. Unlike $GOOGL, $AMZN unlikely to be able to generate enough free cash flow to finance this 42% higher y/y capex bill although balance sheet is plenty strong. [image]

More capex is a good thing for both the companies that are spending more and the broader AI trade.  Market disagrees with me.  $AMZN capex growth in 2026 projected to be 54%.  Whisper was it was going to 40% up from 18% in-print.  Here's where we stand if they hit the high end of…

Some set of investors don't like today's big tech capex because from their perspective they priced in special dividends down the road as cash grew. They did not price in a change in what it takes to be in aspects of the software business, from COGS or investment perspectives.
